About the Graduate Development Program
National Grid's Graduate Development Program (GDP) is an in-depth training and development program for high achieving recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 8-week Orientation which gives you exposure to all part of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US.
Following Orientation, Graduates begin working in their hired position. Additionally, all Graduates will develop leadership skills through quarterly development session and a Capstone Project at the completion of your first year with National Grid. You will meet amazing individuals, both within our organization and local communities and will be assigned a mentor who will provide guidance and insight to help you start and progress in your career.
About the Position
The Associate Engineer is responsible for directly supporting execution of the Company's implementation plans related to grid modernization and the design and operation of the Company's electric distribution system. The Associate Engineer, Grid Modernization role will work within a multi-disciplinary team responsible for all phases of implementation including technology review and selection; defining project budget, scope and timeline; distribution planning and design; project management; internal and external reporting and tracking; and stakeholder engagement. Individual will also support efforts to research and develop plans for additional modernization opportunities including investigation and assessment of new tools and technologies relevant to the modernization of the electric distribution system.
Position responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Support multi-disciplinary teams across three states from distribution engineering, system planning, substation engineering, telecommunications engineering, standards, system operations, field operations, IT, regulatory, legal, community relations, corporate strategy and other groups to ensure effective and efficient implementation of grid modernization programs.
Develop expertise in grid modernization technologies such as distribution automation, DSCADA, distributed generation interconnection, energy storage, microgrids, and distribution management systems.
Participate in review and assessment of technology options related to grid modernization.
Develop project documentation with need statement, scope, description of technical solution, alternatives considered, risks and mitigations, budget and timeline.
Support internal and external tracking and reporting requirements associated with grid modernization programs, including reporting of metrics related to the achievement of project benefits.
Bachelor or Master's degree in an Engineering discipline from an accredited institution. Preference for electrical, power systems and technology focused degrees.
Understanding of electrical engineering concepts such as load flow, stability voltage regulation, power factor, losses etc.
Strong analytical skills including experience using qualitative tools
Strong interest in sustainability and industry transformation
Demonstrated business development aptitude with strong presentation skills;
Familiarity with grid modernization technologies
Ideal candidate is customer driven; displays initiative as a change agent with a can-do attitude; accepts responsibility.
Graduated between May 2018 and May 2019
Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; official college transcript required for confirmation
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program June 3, 2019
Valid driver's license with safe driving history
Proven leadership experience in at least one of the following:
College leadership position (e.g., student government, clubs, athletics).
Leadership and/or volunteer experience, in and/or out of the college environment
Experienced a full or part-time job while at college and acquired relevant work experience
