  • Meet and consult with department chair, graduate nursing program coordinator and graduate faculty to identify the practicum placements required to meet the learning goals of the department and the graduate nursing program.

  • Meet and consult with department chair, undergraduate nursing program coordinator and undergraduate faculty to identify clinical placements required to meet the learning goals of the department and the undergraduate nursing program when needed.

  • Identify, recruit, and tour new practicum graduate nursing student placement sites and undergraduate clinical placement sites.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with representatives of the facilities in which students are placed through meeting site expectations.

  • Review and recommend appropriate practicum/clinical sites that would meet the identified regulatory and educational requirements for practicum/clinical experiences for nursing students in the nursing program.

  • Collaborate with practicum/clinical staff, practicum/clinical affiliates, and preceptors, as well as Bowie State University General Counsel and administration and staff to maintain currency in all contractual agreements.

  • Identify potential adjunct practicum/clinical faculty and preceptors for the nursing program.

  • Maintain a list of the approved adjunct practicum/clinical faculty and preceptors by practicum/clinical specialty for the nursing program.

  • Identify potential student learning experiences in practicum/clinical sites for the nursing program.

  • Use continuous process improvement skills to refine practicum/clinical paperwork to create a seamless procedure for nursing students and practicum/clinical affiliates.

  • Adhere to and ensure practicum/clinical affiliate deadlines are met for required practicum/clinical documentation.

  • Evaluate and file the required documents of nursing students for approval of practicum/clinical affiliation.

  • Communicate with practicum/clinical sites through written communications (letters) each semester and as often as necessary.

  • Conduct site visits to practicum/clinical sites on an annual basis and as needed.

  • Attend required meetings at affiliated practicum/clinical sites.

  • Update Practicum/Clinical Placement Logs each semester with all practicum/clinical facilities.

  • Attend community professional meetings and recruitment job fairs.

  • Secure and renew affiliation agreements or Memorandums of Understanding between BSU Department of Nursing and practicum/clinical sites.

  • Maintain an updated database with specific compliance and/or training requirements for each practicum/clinical, and/or community facility.

  • Clear students in the Typhon Nurse Practitioner Tracking System (NPTS) one semester prior to practicum placements.

  • Clear students in the Centralized Clinical Placement System (Castle Branch) one semester prior to clinical placements.

  • Maintain clearance records on nursing students and submit such completed records upon request to practicum/clinical affiliates, including CPR verification, health clearances, background checks, resumes, graduate student malpractice insurance, certificate of insurance, and nursing practice training modules that may be required.

  • Prepare immunization documents for all practicum/clinical affiliates if requested.

  • Maintain files and all practicum/clinical documentation for current students.

  • Schedule and notify nursing students and nursing faculty regarding the practicum/clinical placement for each student each semester, as appropriate.

  • Obtain orientation documents for all nursing students entering the practicum/clinical setting.

  • Distribute to practicum/clinical faculty and preceptors the nursing student and affiliation evaluation forms and practicum/clinical teaching forms needed.

  • Maintain all files related to nursing student practicum/clinical assignments.

  • Collaborate with the graduate program coordinator and graduate nursing practicum faculty to evaluate practicum sites.

  • Collaborate with the undergraduate program coordinator and undergraduate nursing faculty to evaluate clinical sites.

  • Schedule make-up practicum/clinical rotations for nursing students with input from graduate nursing practicum faculty or undergraduate nursing faculty as appropriate, if needed.

  • Schedule orientation sessions and meetings with and serves as a resource contact and support person for graduate nursing faculty and graduate nursing practicum faculty.

  • Schedule orientation sessions and meetings with and serves as a resource contact and support person for undergraduate nursing faculty and undergraduate nursing clinical faculty.

  • Provide input into the evaluation process of practicum/clinical sites and practicum/clinical preceptors.

  • In collaboration with the Department of Nursing Chair/Graduate Program Coordinator, manages graduate nursing student practicum placement issues as appropriate.

  • In collaboration with the Department of Nursing Chair/Undergraduate Program Coordinator, manages undergraduate nursing student clinical placement issues as appropriate.

  • Coordinate all practicum/clinical and site evaluations and manages the databases.

  • Any other duties as may be assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Master's degree in Nursing or a related field required.

Experience

A minimum of four (4) years of clinical experience as a registered nurse required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The Clinical Placement Coordinator must possess the following skills and attributes: management and leadership skills; organizational research skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills; strong clinical and professional skills; licensed and insured to drive a vehicle; ability to interpret learning experience needs of undergraduate and graduate nursing students and match them to the capabilities of clinical placement agencies. Must be proficient in computer usage and Microsoft Office suite. Must be able to work independently and autonomously.
