Winthrop Position Title Graduate Associate Residence Director Fall 2024 Job Purpose

A Residence Director (RD) is a member of the Residence Life Staff who reports directly to the Assistant Director of Residence Life in his/her area and is responsible for the quality of living in a residence hall. The RD assists individual residents in developing their personal, academic and social skills.

The RD serves as a role model, provides resource and referral information and develops community based on consideration for others and the regulations and policies set by Winthrop University. The RD is responsible for the training and supervision of 6 Resident Assistants. The RD also hires, trains, schedules and supervises staff for the hall office. The RD serves as a liaison to the Residence Life Office in regard to administrative procedures, maintenance and building management.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision, training and support to a staff of Resident Assistants, Office Hosts and Night Hosts. • Attend weekly school year meetings with central staff followed by a weekly meeting with your Resident Assistant staff. • Responsible for all the details of opening and closing in the hall at the beginning and end of each semester and breaks. • Ensure proper resident records are being kept, organized and made accessible to staff within the hall office. • Ensure the hall office is properly stocked with all needed forms, supplies and information needed for efficient functioning. • Work effectively with Residence Life, Facilities Management and Campus Police regarding safety, use and maintenance of the hall. • Maintain accurate records of Work Requests and repair progress for the hall. • Maintain accurate records of all building keys, both signed out to residents and those in the hall key box. • Ensure important notices are posted in prominent places, including the on duty cell phone number and schedule. • Advise, support and attend Hall Council meetings and functions, acting as a mentor and role model for officers. • Instruct residents in fire procedure and have two scheduled fire drills per semester. • Participate in staff training and the staff selection process each semester. • Complete monthly health and safety inspections as applicable (exterminator, fire extinguisher, facilities checklist, health & safety). • Know hall residents through individual contact and interaction. • Understand the importance of confidentiality and the appropriate use of information. • Be able to do informal counseling and mediation with students, while also being familiar with counseling resources for referrals. • Be proactive working with students in regard to discipline and damage, and help them in redirecting problem behavior. • Strive for creating an environment that stimulates individual, academic and community growth. • Guide Resident Assistants in developing and implementing programming which fosters student development, enhances academic achievement and develops a strong community environment. Participate in Residence Life committees. • Take a proactive approach in anticipating and addressing potential problems within the building. Communicate important announcements and updates to residents in a timely manner (planned repairs/outages, exterminator…). Support all areas of the Division of Student Affairs Perform other duties and projects as assigned by the Department of Residence Life.

Prior experience as a Resident Assistant or in Residence Life, property management, or similar area
