The Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education (OMSE) offers a variety of services and programs to enhance the academic experience of diverse student populations at the University of Maryland. The mission of OMSE is to serve undergraduate multi-ethnic students to increase rates of matriculation, retention, graduation, and overall GPA. As an academic unit under the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), OMSE recognizes the value of the multiple histories, beliefs and ethnic backgrounds of our students and works with faculty and staff to support ethnic diversity and inclusion at the university.
Sister to Sister (S2S) is a first year retention program created to establish an academic excellence and leadership forum for multi-ethnic females. Members of S2S serve as mentors and academic tutors to first year females. Sister to Sister also provides students with leadership opportunities, as well as personal, academic, and professional development opportunities.
The goals of the Sister to Sister program are:
100% retention of first year multi-ethnic females.
Active engagement and completion of program components
To build a social network to support the retention of multi-ethnic females.
To connect undergraduate multi-ethnic females with upper-class students and professional mentors.
To increase awareness and engagement of participants with the University Partners Program.
The graduate assistant (GA) for the Sister to Sister Program will lead recruitment, facilitation and management of a a first year retention program for the Office of Multli-Ethnic Student Education. As a first year retention program focused on multi-ethnic female-identifying students, the GA will serve as a primary point of contact, mentor, and leader to the executive board and members of the program. The graduate assistant will assist with meeting the goals and objectives of the Sister to Sister program. This position will report to the director and assistant program director to support the program as follows:
Facilitating Sister to Sister program curriculum as advised by OMSE staff and supervisor;
Attending and facilitating all key Sister to Sister meetings and events (e.g. General Body Meetings, Executive Board Meetings, and cross program events);
Overseeing and mentoring student Executive Board (eboard), facilitating eboard progress reviews;
Updating and managing program database to track student progress and program requirement completion;
Submitting regular program reports and bi-annual assessment data;
Facilitating Sister to Sister summer recruitment outreach, meetings, and planning;
In collaboration with others, monitoring program budget and Sister to Sister inventory (e.g., program marketing incentives);
Submitting all required internal forms and requests in a timely manner;
Attending mandatory and non-mandatory meetings, trainings, and events as requested;
Providing coverage at and support with OMSE Signature events, including but not limited to, Meet and Greet, Giving Day, Academy of Excellence Awards (AAEA), Maryland Day, Homecoming;
Working all scheduled in-person office hours at Hornbake office; and
Other related duties as assigned.
There are two half-time graduate assistant positions available. This graduate assistantship will require weekly evening coverage and occasional weekend work.
