The Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education (OMSE) offers a variety of services and programs to enhance the academic experience of diverse student populations at the University of Maryland. The mission of OMSE is to serve undergraduate multi-ethnic students to increase rates of matriculation, retention, graduation, and overall GPA. As an academic unit under the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), OMSE recognizes the value of the multiple histories, beliefs and ethnic backgrounds of our students and works with faculty and staff to support ethnic diversity and inclusion at the university.

The Service Learning Certificate (SLC) program is a service learning program in which members facilitate peer-tutoring for undergraduate multi-ethnic students at UMD. The Service Learning Certificate program provides an opportunity for students to actively engage in the following five stages of Service Learning:

  • Inventory and Investigation

  • Preparation and Planning

  • Action - Direct Service, Advocacy

  • Reflection

  • Demonstration

SLC students will have met the following goals, acquired skills (e.g., peer tutoring, social justice development, awareness and competency, personal and professional development, intellectual development, social and civic responsibility) and competencies through experiential activities, workshops, dialogues, readings and ongoing training.

The graduate assistant (GA) for the Service Learning Certificate (SLC) Program will oversee the daily operations of the SLC Program, and support OMSE assessment projects. This position will report to the assistant program director of assessment and the director and will support the program as follows:

  • Facilitating SLC program curriculum as advised by OMSE staff and supervisor;

  • Attending and facilitating key SLC meetings and events (e.g. General Body Meetings, Executive Board Meetings, and cross program events);

  • Overseeing and mentoring student Executive Board (eboard), facilitating eboard progress reviews;

  • Updating and managing program database to track student progress and program requirement completion;

  • Managing assignments and announcements for SLC program ELMS page;

  • Assisting with coordinating with tutoring matching process with the OMSE tutoring team and monitoring service learning hours;

  • Submitting weekly SLC program reports and bi-annual assessment data;

  • Facilitating SLC recruitment outreach, meetings, and planning;

  • In collaboration with others, monitor program budget and SLC inventory (e.g., program marketing incentives);

  • Submitting all required internal forms and requests in a timely manner;

  • Maintaining deadlines and announcements for the OMSE Graduate Assistants ELMS page;

  • Assisting with compiling and formatting OMSE assessment reports, creating basic data visualizations such as charts, graphs and tables as requested;

  • Attending mandatory and non-mandatory meetings, trainings, and events as requested;

  • Providing coverage at and support with OMSE Signature events, including but not limited to, Meet and Greet, Giving Day, Academy of Excellence Awards (AAEA), Maryland Day, Homecoming;

  • Working all scheduled in-person office hours at Hornbake office;

  • Attending mandatory and non-mandatory meetings, trainings, and events as requested; and

  • Other related duties as assigned.

This graduate assistantship will require weekly evening coverage and occasional weekend work.
