About This Role:

This position is responsible for the coordination, administration, and evaluation of the Outdoor Pursuits programs. The program is a part of the Recreational Sports Department and is comprised of four different program areas: Climbing Wall, Teambuilding, Special Events, & Gear Rentals. In addition to the primary duties, the individual will also help with the supervision of the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center and assist with planning and coordinating special events. Other duties may be assigned when necessary. This is a 10-month position and non-benefits eligible. Reports directly to the Associate Director of Recreational Sports.

Hours:

  • 19.5 hours per week. Must be available during week, nights, and weekends for Outdoor Pursuits operations, special events, and general Recreational Sports supervision as assigned.

What You'll Do - Position Responsibilities

This position is vital to the success and reputation of the Outdoor Pursuits program. This position requires previous experience in outdoor recreation, excellent time management skills, ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, work independently and as part of a team and be able to make sound judgement calls when resources are limited.

  • Plan, organize, administer, and evaluate a comprehensive Outdoor Pursuits program including Gear Rentals, Climbing Wall, Special Events and Team Building.

  • On-site supervision at Outdoor Pursuits events and general facility usage.

  • Maintaining the Rock Wall including changing of climbing routes, evaluating safety and actual physical structure.

  • Oversee the inventory, repair, maintenance, and replacement plan of equipment.

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations for the Gear Shop and Climbing Wall.

  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise outdoor pursuits student staff for all program areas.

  • Develop and publish staff schedules for all program areas and special events.

  • Development of student staff through staff training, goal setting and evaluations.

  • Oversee staff worked hours and approve bi-weekly payroll of student staff.

  • Conduct specific technical trainings for student staff on a regular basis.

  • Evaluate student staff performance and adherence to safety protocols at the climbing wall.

  • Keep excellent records of incidents, accidents, and close calls to better train staff and maintain a safe environment.

  • Assist with on-call responsibilities, especially in the evenings and on weekends.

  • Develop and foster relationships with other campus departments, student organizations, and community partners.

  • Participate in departmental responsibilities for marketing, outreach, events, and staff development.

  • Assist in the continued university and department effort to provide a welcoming environment and equitable approaches to policy and practice for the campus community through inclusive facilities, programs, services, and staff.

  • Enforce Rec Center, Outdoor Pursuits and Lamar University rules and policies when a patron breaks them.

  • Work with Graphic Designers to update the web base medias, flyers, and website for assigned activities.

  • Supervision of student employees (8-10 Outdoor Pursuits Staff and 45-50 overall Recreational Sports staff).

  • Become and stay consistently certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid.

  • Reports directly to the associate director of Recreational Sports

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport Management, or related field and continued enrollment in the Lamar University Graduate program.

  • Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and remain in good standing with the university. CPR/AED/First Aid certification preferred.

  • Experience and involvement in NIRSA & AORE also preferred.
