This graduate assistantship is within the Office of Student Health Promotion (SHP) within the Division of Student Affairs. The SHP Graduate Assistant's (GA) major function is to assist in the operation of the Sycamore Pantry and provide health education programming. They are expected to carry out their responsibilities in a manner that will further personal growth in students and promote self-awareness within the community at large. The GA is supervised by the Director of Student Health Promotion, under the guidance of the Dean of Students.; In short, the Graduate Assistant position responsibilities include: Education and Outreach, Administrative, including operating the Sycamore Pantry, Service to Individual Students, and Supervision of Undergraduate Student Assistants.

Specific Responsibilities Work Schedule

20 hours per week; Mon-Fri 8:00-5:00pm with some evenings and weekends required

NCAA Guidelines

Job Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Described below are areas of Student Health Promotion in which the Graduate Assistant (GA) has significant responsibilities. Within the total job description, as well as the specific responsibilities, the GA is encouraged to develop their own style, educational philosophy, and professional temperament to best meet the needs of students at Indiana State University.

Administrative Functions

The physical environment in which a student resides provides a foundation upon which the community growth and development can occur in a productive and positive manner. As a University official, the Graduate Assistant must have a thorough knowledge of the objectives of the University, the Division of Student Affairs, and Student Health Promotion. The following administrative responsibilities are seen as important aspects of the GA position:

  • Maintain inventory, donation logs, and cleanliness for Sycamore Pantry
  • Present or facilitate already established programs related to health and wellness
  • Develop programs related to health and/or wellness
  • Assist the Director with grant writing projects
  • Participate in office/division committees and projects
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service
  • Communicate effectively with a diverse population
  • Participate in all staff meetings, seminars, and staff orientation meetings and workshops
  • Maintain accurate tracking of student participation in programming and pantry
  • Assist in supervising undergraduate student workers and volunteers
  • Collaborate with other offices and departments to provide programming
  • Manage and strive to provide an attractive, pleasant, safe, and well-maintained office environment
  • Assist with assigned special projects and office initiatives.
  • Respect and maintain the privacy and confidentiality of staff and students

Service to Individual Students

  • The primary responsibility of the Graduate Assistant within SHP is to meet the needs of individual students. The end result of the health promotion process should be increased awareness of ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Specific expectations of the GA regarding individual students include: Implements and is knowledgeable of the mission, goals, and vision of Student Health Promotion, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Indiana State University.
  • Be familiar with the principles of health education, behavior change, and student learning, which actively encourages personal choices that reflect a healthy lifestyle.
  • Familiarizes self and continues to read and study current literature on wellness, student development theory, and health education and promotion best practices.
  • Represent Student Health Promotion to parents, guests, and members of the University community
  • Makes referrals to other University and community agencies as needed
  • Provides wellness educational to individuals when appropriate and maintains a timely response to issues.
  • Assists students in need of special services and accommodations
  • Follows up on concerns about individual students

Education and Outreach

The primary responsibility of the GA is to help develop and coordinate educational efforts in the area of health and wellness. The GA and the Director of Student Health Promotion are responsible for implementing initiatives to meet the needs of the campus community. Together, they will utilize the Sycamore Standard as their developmental plan for programming. Educational initiatives are meant to maximize the individual's well-being and to establish lifestyle patterns that promote well-being throughout the students' lives.

Student Health Promotion has an obligation to educate students about the choices available to them and provide an excellent arena for out of class learning. Listed below are the expectations for the GA in their role as programmer:

  • Implement programs consistent with the dimensions wellness
  • Continually evaluate programming/educational efforts
  • Encourage and support community related health and wellness efforts
  • Collaborate with other departments and offices to implement these programming/educational efforts
  • Be aware of and encourage involvement in other programs on campus and in the community
  • Develop, describe, and document all program efforts that occur in Student Health Promotion and Sycamore Pantry (either sponsored or co-sponsored)
  • Foster an environment conducive to mine and other's health, wellness, and safety
  • Develop and maintain programming files from to use as continued resources for the office/division
