Functional Title: Graduate Assistant for Residential Education
Division: Student Affairs
Department: Residential Education
Reports to: Assistant Director of Residential Education for the First Year Residential Experience (FYRE)
Position Description:
Under the supervision of the Director of Residential Education, the Graduate Assistant (GA) for Residential Education will work collaboratively with full-time and student staff in the Office of Residential Education, as well as across other Student Affairs departments, to foster and promote inclusive, intentional learning opportunities for the residential students at Stevens.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Residential Curriculum planning and development
Living-learning community support, research, and development
Roompact management
Assist in the creation of Living-Learning Community initiatives, faculty fellow partnerships, and curriculum development
Meet monthly with Living-Learning Community stakeholders
Participate in campus-wide initiatives and events
Attend department meetings and one on ones with supervisor
Engage in department committees (RA Training, RA Recruitment and Selection)
Serve on the Supervisor on Call (SOC) duty rotation, respond to student crises as they arise
Candidate Requirements
Graduate Assistants must have received a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution prior to the start of their contract.
Graduate Assistants must be enrolled as a graduate student at an accredited institution prior to the start of their contract. Preference will be given to those enrolled in Higher Education and Student Affairs or related program.
Previous Residential Education or Residence Life experience is preferred.
Dates and Hours
Graduate Assistants are expected to work 20 hours per week.
Time away should be negotiated with a direct supervisor. GAs may be excused from work hours during the Spring Break for the institution at which they are a student; the dates must be communicated with the direct supervisor at the time of hire.
Summer GA positions are not guaranteed or required. GAs must negotiate directly with their department regarding summer employment opportunities.
GAs are expected to attend monthly Student Affairs meetings: Thursdays at 10am; dates are communicated in advance
GAs may opt to participate in Student Affairs committees and projects.
Compensation
The Stevens Student Affairs Graduate Assistant package is valued at $15,000 per academic year.
GAs in Residential Education and Residential and Dining Services are required to live in Stevens Housing and serve on the On-Call rotation. The housing is provided in addition to the $15,000 in compensation.
Those GAs in other positions are not required to live in Housing and serve On Call, but no housing is provided for those positions and no additional compensation is offered if the choice is made not to participate in the On-Call rotation.
GAs may negotiate directly with their department to work during the summer months; Summer GAs are paid hourly.
Each department offers annual funding to support GA professional development.
Graduate Assistants in Residential Education and in Residential and Dining Services only also receive meal plans as part of their compensation.
Housing and Meals
Graduate Assistants who serve On Call and reside in Stevens Housing are assigned to a space on campus. The assignment is subject to change with advance notice.
Only Residential Education and Residential and Dining Services Graduate Assistants receive meals as part of their compensation. These Graduate Assistants receive a meal plan (the Residence Life Meal Plan) and $100 in Duckbills for fall and spring semesters. Those who work over the summer receive 30 meals and $250 in Duckbills (the Residence Life Summer Meal Plan).
On Call Responsibilities
Stevens Policies Specific to Student Affairs Graduate Assistants
Title IX and Clery Act Reporting
All Student Affairs Graduate Assistants are mandatory reporters for Title IX incidents, as well as crimes that are reportable under the Clery Act. GAs must attend annual trainings on both Title IX and Clery Act/Campus Security Authority to learn more about what and how to report.
Non-Fraternization Policy
Prohibits all employees from engaging in amorous or sexual relationships with any student under their supervision and prohibits engaging in amorous or sexual relationships with any undergraduate student.
Strongly discourages full-time employees from engaging in consensual and sexual relationships with graduate students.
