Compensation

This is a 10-month position, 20 hours/week with a $10,000 stipend, $6,000 tuition waiver ($3,000 per semester), and renewal after a successful first year. Professional development funding and summer employment potential.

20 hours a week, this will include weekends, evenings, and holidays (University Breaks & Winter Intersession)

Stipend is August to May (summer hours may be available)

Nature & Purpose of Position

Position Overview

The Graduate Assistant of Operations plays a key role in the day-to-day management and facility operations of the Sam Houston State University Campus Recreation Center. This position will assist in guiding the Campus Recreation Department in a manner that is consistent with the goals of the department, Division of Student Affairs, and the mission of Sam Houston State University. The Graduate Assistant will provide direct oversight in all areas of student personnel management including, but not limited to, recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and development. This role offers valuable experience in facility management, personnel management, and operational logistics in a collegiate recreation setting as well as flexibility to implement new ideas and collaborate with campus partners. All graduate assistants for Campus Recreation function as members of the professional staff and participate in meetings, assist with policy and procedure revision, distribution and administration, and provide suggestions and feedback as part of the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly oversee the personnel management of the operations team. This includes, but is not limited to, recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and development of 50+ part-time student employees.
  • Develop and conduct ongoing student staff orientations, in-service trainings, and workshops to promote student development and growth.
  • Assist with the purchasing, inventory, and maintenance of facility and equipment.
  • Support risk management protocols to maintain a safe and secure environment for all users through preventative maintenance and knowledge of the facility emergency action plan.
  • Assist in tracking facility usage, preparing reports, and offering recommendations for operational improvements.
  • Collaborate effectively with both student employees and professional staff to cultivate a positive and productive work environment.
  • Enforce departmental policies and procedures to ensure consistency and safety.
  • Supervise the Campus Recreation Center mornings, afternoons, evenings, or weekends as needed.
  • Provide support to professional staff as needed and perform other tasks as assigned.

Other Requirements for the Position

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in physical education, Recreation, Sport Management, or related field.

Candidates must have knowledge/experience in recreation or sports management, strong human relations skills, and acceptance into SHSU graduate school.

CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
