About This Role:

This position is responsible for the coordination, administration and evaluation of the Aquatic program and operations. In addition to the primary duties, the individual will also help with the supervision of the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center and assist with planning and coordinating special events. Other duties may be assigned when necessary. This is a 10-month position and non-benefits eligible. Reports directly to the Associate Director of Recreational Sports.

Hours:

  • 19.5 hours per week. Must be available during nights and weekends for Aquatic operations, training classes, and general Recreational Sports supervision as assigned.

What You'll Do - Position Responsibilities

  • This position is vital to the success and reputation of the Aquatics program. This position requires previous experience in aquatics, excellent time management skills, ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, work independently and as part of a team and be able to make sound judgement calls when resources are limited.

  • Plan, organize, administer, and evaluate a comprehensive Aquatic program and operation.

  • On-site supervision at Aquatic events and general facility usage.

  • Schedule and conduct Aquatic training programs and staffing of the Aquatic facility.

  • Research & development of safety guidelines for the Aquatics Department and Recreational Sports.

  • Revise rules, policies, and assist with inventory control.

  • Manage daily administration of reports for Aquatics activities, including correspondence with student staff and Aquatic participants.

  • Prepare, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate student staff.

  • Oversee staff worked hours and approve bi-weekly payroll of student staff.

  • Plan and help conduct Aquatic staff in-services and skills each week.

  • Inspect all on-site facilities daily, documenting any problems and presenting these problems to supervisor.

  • Update the web base medias for assigned activities.

  • Prepare and distribute instructor schedules for various training classes.

  • Assist with on-site decision-making concerning cancellation due to pool problems, rescheduling classes, ejecting patrons, handling patrons who engage in inappropriate conduct.

  • Prepare equipment and have equipment accessible for training classes and aquatic events.

  • Prepare, promote, market, schedule, and evaluate the comprehensive Aquatic program including operations, special events, and training classes.

  • Prepare classrooms and indoor pool when needed. (This includes set up and take down)

  • Assist in program evaluation and development of policies and procedures for Aquatic programs and general operations.

  • Assist with the supervision of student employees (8-10 Aquatic Staff and 50-65 overall Recreational Sports staff)

  • Assist with on-call responsibilities, especially in the evenings and on weekends.

  • Assist with the ordering of staff shirts, equipment, etc.

  • Develop and foster relationships with other campus departments, student organizations, and community partners.

  • Assist in the continued university and department effort to provide a welcoming environment and equitable approaches to policy and practice for the campus community through inclusive facilities, programs, services, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport Management, or related field and continued enrollment in the Lamar University Graduate program.

  • Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and remain in good standing with the University.

  • Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certified.

  • Lifeguard Instructor and CPR Instructor certification preferred or obtain certification within 60 days.

  • Experience and involvement in NIRSA also preferred.
