BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

  • Must be a Christian and a member of a church that holds to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, believing in the New and Old Testaments of the Holy Bible.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

  • The Graduate Advisor for the Graduate School of Business oversees advising for approximately 150 students across several academic programs. This position works in cooperation with other Graduate Advisors within the department to assess academic progress, respond to student academic inquiries, assist in the resolution of academic problems, and refer students to appropriate support services as necessary. This position also assists students in the development of academic plans and class schedules as well as initiates and maintains contact with advisees as well as academic departments to coordinate care and track academic progress.
  • A Graduate Advisor advises students concerning their academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and other academic activities and career goals, to assist the student in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree required and master's degree preferred

  • 2-3 years advising experience preferred

  • Knowledge of academic environments, particularly in higher education, and principles of student development theory and academic advising.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and community relations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a commitment to represent DBU well to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to plan, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Knowledge of rules, standards, regulations, and laws regarding student records.

  • Ability to investigate, analyze data, draw conclusions, and make decisions to solve problems.

  • Proficiency with an integrated administrative system and current computer software programs.

  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

  • Ability to make administrative /procedural decisions and judgments.

  • Flexibility to work independently and as a member of a team.

  • Ability to comply with rules, standards, regulations, FERPA-related laws, and laws related to student records and confidentiality.

  • Ability to adhere to university and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Ability to work weekends or evenings as needed.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advise specific student caseload of approximately 150 graduate business students including but not limited to academic program planning and schedule planning, and provide referrals to and coordinate with faculty, as appropriate.

  • Assess academic progress and respond to student academic inquiries.

  • Provide a one-stop service for graduate business students by assisting students with the completion of required documentation (e.g. course substitutions, course transfers, concurrent enrollment, continuous progress, course withdrawal, registration appeal, course incomplete and/or extension, transcript evaluation, graduation application packet, and others) as well as assisting in the resolution of academic problems and referring students to appropriate support services as necessary.

  • Develop, create, and complete campaigns for targeted student outreach to promote appropriate academic progress and completion.

  • Work with program directors to keep updated on degree plan changes, course recommendations, degree requirements, and course availability.

  • Meet with students regularly to review degree progress and graduation requirements.

  • Keep up with registration deadlines and help ensure students register on time.

  • Assist students with any changes in their course of study.

  • Attend college fairs to meet with potential students.

  • Review career goals with students and help them follow the proper track to reach their goals including making them aware of career development training, internship, and mentoring opportunities.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This is a full-time position with regular office hours between 8:00 a.m.

  • 5:00 p.m., Monday

  • Friday.

WORK LOCATION:

This position will work on the main campus, located at 3000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211
