Grade 6 ELA Teacher

The Sixth Grade English Language Arts Teacher, under the direction of the administration, and in collaboration with grade level and other ELA teachers, will create an effective classroom environment that promotes student learning and personal growth; will plan and make instructional decisions based on student needs and learning outcomes; will provide experiential, collaborative, and hands-on learning opportunities that are challenging and engaging for every student; will motivate students to become lifelong learners; will promote character development by teaching the Magellan core values of respect, responsibility, and integrity; will develop communication and life skills needed to be successful leaders in our global community.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • teaching English Language Arts using an interdisciplinary, project-based approach whenever possible and appropriate.
  • understanding, teaching and enriching the NC Standard Course of Study.
  • developing effective lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • providing personalized, small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • using a variety of creative and engaging instructional strategies, such as inquiry, small group discussion, work stations, and project/problem based learning.
  • infusing social-emotional learning into the daily instructional program.
  • establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior necessary in achieving an optimal learning atmosphere.
  • using both formative and summative assessment strategies to evaluate students' academic growth and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • providing targeted intervention to students who are not consistently meeting grade-level benchmarks
  • keeping appropriate/accurate records and preparing progress reports and report cards.
  • communicating with parents through conferences, phone calls, and/or emails to develop trust and discuss students' progress.
  • collaborating and planning regularly with other ELA teachers.
  • serving as an integral member of the grade level team.
  • continually seeking opportunities to grow professionally through in-service education activities.
  • performing other duties as assigned by the school administrators.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Valid teaching license for 6th grade ELA

  • Experience teaching middle school ELA preferred

  • Deep knowledge of the NC Standard Course of Study, assessment strategies, and evidence-based literacy instructional practices and programs

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Effective interpersonal skills
