Job Description

We are currently looking for a Government Affairs Manager for North America, to be based, ideally, in either Mentor, OH (near Cleveland) or the Washington, DC, area, and reporting to the Vice-President & Associate General Counsel, Americas. This person will be a trusted advisor for providing and executing some of the most critical strategic initiatives for Avery Dennison and its businesses in North America (the United States and Canada). The person in this role will help drive agendas for engagement with government stakeholders and be a vital advocate in the ecosystem for Avery Dennison's role in sustainability and the digital transformation of products and solutions, supply chains, and labeling.

Importantly, this role will partner broadly with Avery Dennison leadership, the company's government affairs functions in Europe and Asia, and other key internal stakeholders. They will cultivate key relationships and partnerships with federal and state legislative bodies and agencies to represent and protect the company's business priorities and interests.

This role is a great opportunity for a candidate to help build a government affairs function and have a pivotal influence that ensures Avery Dennison is at the forefront of the ESG and climate-related legislative agendas at the federal and state levels.

We seek a teammate who is equally driven by their own growth and development as a professional as they are about how they can collaboratively contribute with innovation and ingenuity. Additionally, we are looking for someone who will challenge the status quo and explore new ways of doing things with a focus on continuous improvement and always complying with Avery Dennison's Values and Code of Conduct.

In This Role, You Will

  • Develop, in partnership with company leadership and business unit stakeholders, the company's North America government relations and public policy strategy and agenda as it relates to the company's strategy and help prioritize actions and resources.

  • Collaborate with EU and Asia government affairs leaders to develop and ensure a consistent global strategy

  • Develop, maintain, and communicate a deep and practical understanding of federal and state legislation and regulations internally and connect these to key business and commercial strategies, with a focus on ESG and the company's digital transformation.

  • Develop, maintain, and leverage relationships with Members of Congress and their key staff, the Administration, industry peers, and trade associations to build trust, mitigate potential obstacles, convey the company's priorities, and impact key public policy objectives.

  • Position Avery Dennison as a thought leader in key national and state debates to support our business growth and stability

  • Support the development of policy positions, strategies, and execution of tactics to influence state and federal legislative activity that are strategic to Avery Dennison.

  • Develop ideas for regulatory or legislative initiatives that may benefit the company.

  • Represent Avery Dennison in organizations and events, identifying suitable opportunities for the leadership team to participate

  • Develop and maintain relationships with outside government relations consultants and advisors and manage those relationships.

  • Advanced degree (or equivalent practical experience) in political science, law, business, economics, or a field related to our issues (e.g., environmental science or chemistry). A J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to a state bar/license to practice law is strongly preferred.

  • Thorough and demonstrable knowledge of the federal and state decision-making processes and ability to identify key stakeholders for Avery Dennison. You ideally have an existing network of decision-makers or are able to develop and leverage such a network effectively in the short to medium term.

  • Demonstrable experience (at least 5 years) building and executing advocacy and engagement strategies, ideally on sustainability or ESG-related themes.

  • Knowledge of existing legislation in the fields of ESG, circular economy, plastics, C02 emissions regulations, apparel, and textiles.

  • Highly customer-focused in approach to teamwork and collaboration, with a great sense of urgency and drive toward achieving goals

  • Excellent in strategic writing and in drafting texts such as position papers and guidance notes

  • High commitment to values, ethics, and integrity, including sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion

The salary range for this position is $125,000 - $200,000 / year.
