In this position, you will help prepare, maintain, and/or repair tees, cups, traps, greens, roughs, fairways, bunkers, creeks, and lakes, and involves the use of hand tools, weed-eaters, fly-mowers, mowing equipment, fertilizer spreaders, and other maintenance tools. Work is performed under supervision, according to specific instruction given by management staff and/or course Superintendent. Employees may be exposed to constant physical exertion, loud noise, machinery, dirt, dust, chemical odors, and extreme weather conditions.


  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn about the care and proper use of tools and equipment used in the development and maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, hazards, and general grounds of a golf course

  • Ability to quickly learn maintenance, care, and construction of greens, tees, fairways, hazards, bunkers, irrigation systems, and general grounds of a golf course

  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn about turf disease, insects and rodents, chemicals, and the methods used to control these elements

  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn about the rules of golf

  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the public.

  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn occupational hazards and safety precautions

  • Ability to work flexible hours with some weekend and holiday work required


  • Ability to report for work on time and perform the duties of the job for an entire workday

  • Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and to repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing more than 100 pounds with assistance


  • Responsible for the safe operation of any equipment used

  • Perform routine manual labor involved in golf course maintenance and construction

  • May sit, stand, stoop, climb ladders and walk for long periods of time

  • Clean, maintain, and service equipment

  • Cut grass with power equipment and hand tools

  • Loads and unloads dirt, gravel, sand and debris

  • Pick up trash on the golf course, in the maintenance building, and on the clubhouse grounds

  • Communicate effectively with other employees in the maintenance department and pro shop area

  • Operate various hand tools, including but not limited to, weed eater, backpack sprayer, backpack blower and water hose

Job Title: Mechanic Stoney Creek Department: Golf Maintenance Reports To: Turf Equipment Manager /Head Mechanic General Description: Assist in ensuring that proper maintenance schedules, parts inventory, and records are kept. Help ensure maintenance is performed according to service manual specifications or to Wintergreen Golf maintenance policies. Stay current on methods of service procedures to help ensure mechanical problems won’t reoccur. Assist in training on operation and safety features of equipment to all employees. Mechanic must take supervision from Golf Superintendent, Turf Equipment Manager or Head mechanic. Special Job Requirements/Qualifications The mechanic should possess a working knowledge in maintenance and repair of 2 and 4 stroke gasoline engines. A basic understanding of diesel engine maintenance and repair is a must. The ability to weld and fabricate metal to make repairs is necessary. Demonstrate the desire to self-educate and perform work with limited supervision. Always be willing to communicate daily with supervisors and fellow associates. The mechanic should be willing to learn the basics of electronics and hydraulic systems as they apply to turf equipment. Understand the golf course daily needs of equipment and help ensure such equipment is available for daily use. Attend service schools when WPI budgets will allow Special Considerations for this Position When needed a varied work schedule could be possible. He must have knowledge of safety practices as prescribed by OSHA, VOHSO, or Wintergreen Policy. He should set a good example for other associates by following these policies. Heavy lifting is required. The mechanic must keep cool under pressure. A valid driver’s license is a must. Working at both Stoney Creek and Devils Knob could be necessary at times. Specific Duties/Responsibilities 1. Help keep the shop clean and orderly and a safe work place 2. Check reel mowers daily for quality of cut and adjustment and rotary blades weekly or as necessary 3. Keep up with equipment hour intervals and perform the necessary service 4. Assist in controlling parts inventory A. Help ensure parts orders are placed B. Identify and label parts when received as to what equipment it is to be used on C. Assist in routing parts to be Devils Knob golf maintenance when received D. Ensure all defective parts are discarded or stored if needed for warranty claims 5. Assist in keeping all equipment in good working condition 6. Assist in keeping maintenance records and service records on all equipment 7. Learn the safety features of each piece of equipment, where they are placed and that they are working properly 8. Help equipment maintenance dept. stay within budget guide lines 9. Must be able to diagnose and fix minor problems that may occur on equipment 10. Learn to operate all equipment correctly and safely 11. At end of shift ensure all tools and chemicals stored in proper place 12. Work with operators daily to ensure equipment is operational and clean 13. Inspect all fire extinguishers monthly for proper charge 14. Read all MSDS sheets and keep MSDS book up to date when new sheets arrive 15. Keep equipment maintenance overtime hours at a minimum Wintergreen Resort Nellysford VA
