As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will create multi-domain dynamic mathematical models for various spaceflight systems and associated ground support infrastructure and test apparatus. You should be comfortable collaborating in a fast-paced environment, contributing to innovative solutions, while demonstrating leadership, and technical competence. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention toward safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and build GN&C software architectures and control system components in MATLAB, Simulink, and C

  • Conduct stability and performance assessments including development of linear and non-linear models

  • Perform analyses, including simulations and Monte-Carlo, to satisfy top-level system specifications and requirements

  • Support systems analysis with a cross-functional mindset to support system level architectural decisions

  • Support the development and execution of GNC software unit testing, software-on-target testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, on-vehicle functional testing, and flight testing

  • Develop math models for complex multi-degree of freedom (e.g. 3DOF, 6DOF) aerospace vehicles and their associated subsystems using first principles and test data

  • Develop and implement simulation architectures and models suitable for faster than real-time Monte-Carlo analysis and real-time hardware-in-the loop (HIL) testing

  • Develop and maintain model documentation and databooks

  • Perform plant model validation using test and flight data

  • Identify opportunities for safety improvements and operational cost savings

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in electrical, mechanical, aerospace engineering, physics, or related discipline

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge in designing, modeling, testing and flying aerospace guidance and control systems for rockets, missiles, or aerodynamic reentry systems

  • Strong software and model development skills, particularly in MATLAB/Simulink and associated autocoding practices

  • Strong mathematical abilities

  • Highly organized and capable of planning and working with technical peers across a variety of domains (e.g., guidance, control, aerodynamic, propulsion, mechanical, fluid, electrical, thermal)

  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills including presenting

  • Able to identify problems, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in electrical, physics, mathematic, mechanical, aerospace or other related engineering disciplines

  • Demonstrated experience in modern control design techniques

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge in the development of exo-atmospheric attitude control systems

  • Demonstrated knowledge in vehicle state estimation

  • Knowledge of dynamic modeling, including multi-body dynamics, flexible body dynamics, gas dynamics, fluids, thermodynamics, and fluid slosh

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with inertial sensors, GPS receivers, and other navigation aids

  • Experience with electro-mechanical, hydraulic and electrical subsystems

  • Experience anchoring/fitting first principles models to test data or high-fidelity external simulations using system identification or other numerical methods

  • Experience developing and verifying physical models for the purpose of control design, component sizing, and system performance evaluation

  • Experience with Monte Carlo simulation testing

  • Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing and test development

  • Ability to continuously manage risk and be comfortable with lean software development techniques

  • Solid system engineering, configuration management skills
