Opportunity:

The Horticulture & Collections department seeks a part-time seasonal Glasshouse Gardener to help with the maintenance of the Cleveland Botanical Garden Costa Rican and Madagascar glasshouses. The Glasshouse Gardener will work with the biome plants through tasks including watering, planting, deadheading, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, staking and litter removal. This position is a part of the Horticulture & Collections team working with Horticulturists, Animal Care Specialists, interns, and volunteers to support the many programs throughout the Cleveland Botanical Garden. The Glasshouse Gardener will learn and be exposed to many facets of conservatory plant care in a public garden setting. This position is based out of the Cleveland Botanical Garden in Cleveland, OH with occasional travel to the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, OH. Position Details:

  • Non-Exempt

  • Seasonal position through September 2024

  • Part-Time, approximately 22.5 hours a week

  • Monday through Friday 7:00 am - 11:30 am

  • flexibility to work weekends if preferred

  • $15.00/hour

  • Great entry level position for anyone looking to gain experience in natural sciences, horticulture, arboriculture, working with Tropical Plants in a biome setting or to gain general experience in the green industry

Key Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities of the Glasshouse Gardener include but are not limited to:

  • Support Holden Forests & Gardens' mission, vision, and values

  • Support the maintenance of all biome plants through tasks including watering, planting, deadheading, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, staking, litter removal, etc.

  • Providing daily exhibit maintenance including hosing pathways and clearing leaves.

  • Assisting with the monitoring plant health and scout for pests

  • Application of chemical, organic, and natural sprays will be required following Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices in accordance with the law including maintaining operational and pesticide records

  • Help with labeling plants in beds through label creation, placement, and maintenance

  • Interacts regularly with guests, members, volunteers, and the public positively to create a welcoming atmosphere

  • Daily maintenance of the glasshouse and animal care areas

  • Providing support to the Senior Horticulturist, Animal Care Specialist, and other Horticulture staff as assigned

  • Assist with the install and de-install of semi-permanent shows/displays

  • Takes direction and follows through with assignments and works well independently

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrate a passion for people and nature

  • Demonstrated interest in horticulture

  • High school diploma, or equivalent, preferred

  • Strong, proven ability to work independently without direct supervision once trained

  • Strong communication, organizational skills, adaptability, and critical thinking skills, highly desired

  • Able to work well in a diverse team

  • Must be able to follow multistep directions and work independently

  • An interest in working indoors and outdoors performing manual labor in all weather conditions

  • A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to participate within a multi-disciplinary team

  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 products, specifically Outlook (email and calendar), or the ability to learn

  • A valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record

Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires work that takes place both indoors in a humid glasshouse and outdoors where the ambient temperature spans 0-100 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Hand and arm dexterity

  • Comfortable standing on elevated platforms, ladders, and aerial lifts elevated up to 30 feet above the ground. Training provided

  • Walking and working on wet, uneven, slippery terrain

  • Carrying up to 50 lbs. on a repetitive basis daily

  • Kneeling, bending, stooping, grabbing, and reaching

  • Ability to walk an average of 3-5 miles per day in variable terrain; occasionally more
