The GIS Analyst position will collect, analyze, interpret, and visualize geospatial data to support decision making and enhance various projects and initiatives within the city. Provides a combination of technical expertise in GIS and an understanding of spatial data analysis. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to create maps and conduct spatial analysis to meet city objectives.

Examples of Duties

  • Geospatial Data Analysis: collects, processes, quality control, validation, and temporal and spatial resolution choices with geospatial data.

  • Map Creation and Visualization; maps software, tools selection, layout and presentation formats; provides visual representation of data results.

  • Collaboration and Communication; provides effective communication to clients and stakeholders; creates collaborative tools and platforms for team projects.

  • Spatial Analysis and Modeling; selects spatial analysis techniques; chooses algorithms and models for modeling and prediction; evaluates geostatistical methods and spatial statistics; analyses results and interpretations of spatial data.

  • Manages data through, data archiving, long-term maintenance strategies, data cataloging, metadata creation, and documentation; allocates resources for data management tasks; complies with data privacy regulations.

  • Assists with GIS Technology Development; selects GIS software and tools such as, software extensions and plugins; stays updated on GIS technologies; Creates custom software development, GIS database design and optimization.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Software

  • Esri ArcGIS platform, CAD software and other supporting software programs and databases;

  • Ability to develop digital maps, brochures, spreadsheets, graphics, communications, or databases using Esri ArcGIS platform; and Adobe Creative Cloud.

  • Municipal/Governmental databases;

  • Spatial Analysis;

  • Geospatial Data Management;

  • Cartography;

  • Remote Sensing;

  • Geostatistics;

  • Programming and Scripting;

  • Spatial Data Visualization;

  • Domain Knowledge;

  • Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking;

  • Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others, including public and city staff.

  • Ability to write routine correspondence and reports, such as memos and status and activity reports.

Supplemental Information

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, Geographical Information Systems, or related field.

  • Three years experience in GIS technology, geospatial analysis, and data management.

  • Three years experience of work in a related position such as GIS Technician or GIS Specialist.

  • OR: Equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Valid Driver's License.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Data Science, Engineering, Planning, or related field.

  • Professional Certification in GIS (GISP) or related fields, such as Asset Management Professional or Project Management Professional.

  • Experience with remote sensing, web mapping technologies, and spatial database management systems.

  • Knowledge of asset management principals.

  • Previous experience in municipal GIS.

  • Strong understanding of statistics and spatial modeling.

  • Previous experience in collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.

  • Demonstrated expertise in programming languages (postgis, SQL, Python, R, Arcade, JavaScript) for geospatial analysis and automation.

  • Ability to develop and apply geospatial models for predictive analysis.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.
