Cornell University, a nationally ranked Ivy League institution, is looking for a Gift Officer for the David M. Einhorn Center for Community Engagement to join the Alumni Affairs & Development division in Ithaca, NY.

The Einhorn Center for Community Engagement, established in 2014 through a generous gift from David M. Einhorn, is dedicated to advancing Cornell University's mission by integrating community-engaged learning into the student experience. Aiming to make community engagement a defining feature of Cornell, the Center ensures every undergraduate participates in significant community-focused activities. Collaborating with all schools, colleges, and administrative offices, the Center fosters opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and alumni to work with community partners, addressing local and global issues to promote a sustainable and just future. As it approaches its 10th year, the Einhorn Center seeks to build annual support and endowment for long-term sustainability, offering a prime opportunity for a development professional to create and implement a comprehensive engagement and fundraising strategy.

The Gift Officer for the David M. Einhorn Center for Community Engagement oversees all fundraising and alumni engagement activities, collaborating with university partners to create opportunities for alumni, parents, and friends to support community-engaged learning for Cornell students. Reporting to the Associate Director of Development for the Student & Campus Life and Athletics AAD team, the Gift Officer works with various teams, including university Alumni Affairs & Development, SCL communications & marketing, and the Einhorn Center staff, to develop a comprehensive engagement and fundraising strategy. In partnership with the Executive Director of the Einhorn Center and the Associate Director of Development, they will outline key priorities, build a case for donor support, and create a plan to grow philanthropic contributions. The focus will be on expanding the donor base for annual support, identifying major gift prospects capable of contributing $500,000 or more, and building the Center's endowment for long-term sustainability.

This is a three-year term position (through June 30, 2027) with the possibility of a one-year extension.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage an estimated pool size of 50 to 75 prospect households with not yet established or early stage giving relationships at Cornell.

  • Develop an annual work plan to manage assigned prospect pool. Outline strategies and actions to partner across SCL and AAD to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward alumni, parents, and friends.

  • Visit goals will be set annually based on multiple factors, including the maturity, geographic distribution, and complexity of the portfolio. The Gift Officer is expected to be a well- prepared, articulate representative of the Einhorn Center and SCL to develop an attractive appeal for fundraising priorities.

  • Manage a comprehensive stewardship program for gifts to the Einhorn Center. This includes formal and informal stewardship efforts that will engage, recognize and steward donors at all levels, with a particular focus on prospects with the highest capacity.

  • Collaborate with Einhorn Center, AAD, and divisional partners to create integrated communications plan to increase awareness, outreach and solicitation activities.

  • Partner with SCL Marketing and Communications team & SCL/ATH AAD team to enhance campaign documents and create a unified message that aligns with the center's mission, tells compelling stories, and brings awareness to the Einhorn Center.

  • In partnership with the Executive Director of the Einhorn Center, continue to develop and activate the Einhorn Center's existing alumni advisory council with a focus on philanthropy, and will manage all aspects of the volunteer group.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

  • Bachelor's degree and 3 to 5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.

  • Understanding of and ability to advocate for the importance of the Einhorn Center's mission/purpose and higher education.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Knowledge of the practices of fundraising and individual giving. Excellent leadership skills and ability to work as part of a team.

  • Effective organizational skills and strong detail orientation. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with individuals across the University and College faculty, key alumni, volunteers, and executive staff.

  • Ability to appropriately handle highly confidential and sensitive information. Ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, and discretion.

  • Ability to excel while handling multiple tasks and competing priorities simultaneously. Must be able and willing to work occasional weekends and evenings, including SCL, Einhorn Center, and University major events.

This position is based in Ithaca, NY with hybrid work arrangements, which means 2 or 3 days on campus and the remainder remote from a commutable distance.
