JOB SUMMARY:

All employees are expected to perform their duties in alignment with the vision and values of the organization. The person doing this job is responsible for a variety of tasks that lead to a high level of customer satisfaction in the most cost-effective manner with respect and dignity. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, the G.I. Instrument Technician performs specialized technical duties, assists in the care and preparation of both inpatients and outpatients in accordance with individual needs, physician orders, Hospital policy and standards of patient care.

EDUCATION:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.

LICENSURES/CERTIFICATION:

  • Prefer one-year previous experience as a G.I. Instrument Technician or possess equivalent experience as determined by the Director of Surgical Services or by the G.I. Lab Supervisor.

  • Current BLS card

  • C.N.A. preferred.

  • Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (These are the essential job functions for this position. The essential functions of this job include, but may not be limited to those listed in this job description.   • Adheres to established Hospital/departmental policies and procedures, objectives, Quality Assessment and Improvement Program, Infection Assessment and Improvement Program, legal, safety, environment control standards and Patient's Bill of Rights.

  • Identifies, assures availability, and prepares appropriate supplies and equipment based on identified G.I. procedures.

  • Demonstrates proper technique in cleaning and disinfecting endoscopes and endoscopic accessories.

  • Demonstrates proper use, and maintains monitoring logs for disinfecting agent/endoscope washer.

  • Assists the physicians during endoscopic procedures as appropriate.

  • Demonstrates proper usage, maintains and cares for equipment and supplies. Documents maintenance and reports to supervisor of any defects or deficiencies as they occur.

  • Transports patients safely.

  • Demonstrates safe use of electrosurgical units.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer/video system.

  • Provides comfort and support for patients. Demonstrates sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of organizational structure and utilizes appropriate channels of communication.

  • Demonstrates a positive cooperative manner when dealing with all members of the health care team.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the approaches to and methods of Continuous Quality Improvement.

  • Collaborates with licensed staff to identify own career and educational needs.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows safety practices. Understands the importance of safety, including patient safety in the work place. Maintains a safe environment for self and others.

  • Actively participates in the Patient Safety Program, including event reporting. Identifies sentinel events/near misses and responds per defined organization processes. Participates in education activities and process implementation. Demonstrates advocacy for the patient/customer and appropriately acknowledges patients, customers and visitors.
