Stantec's Geotechnical practice has an immediate opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer or Geotechnical Engineer in Training. You will provide comprehensive geotechnical services to Stantec clients from field explorations to the design and construction management of complex geotechnical structures. You will provide specialized services such as the analysis and design of foundation elements, dam and levee structures, and seismic remediation design.

Your Opportunity

The role of an entry level geotechnical engineer is to work on projects both small and large, and as a team member under the close guidance and supervision of a senior engineer. You will perform a variety of tasks related to geotechnical engineering in support of transportation, dam, power, and infrastructure projects that may include calculations, field work, coordination of simple tasks, and meeting attendance and recording. The smaller projects that an entry level civil engineer may be assigned to will have relatively few complex features.

In general, an entry level engineer will assist more senior engineers/designers by performing the routine aspects of civil engineering assignments.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Reviews boring logs and laboratory data

  • Conducts basic calculations and performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned and under the supervision of a project engineer.

  • May perform field work related to geotechnical explorations and/or construction related activities.

  • Assists team in preparing civil designs, drawings, specifications, presentations and reports.

  • Assists in supporting the civil team in providing support services during construction that can include submittal reviews, responses to requests for information and contract document clarifications.

  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • An understanding of geotechnical engineering concepts and analysis methods.

  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.

  • Ability to interpret sketches, engineering drawings, and other similar material.

  • Basic experience in Microsoft Office, and familiarity with AutoCAD Civil3D, Geostudio, and gINT.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Willing to travel on an as-needed basis in support of geotechnical investigations, construction, and inspections.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering. Masters preferred.

  • PE In Tennessee or ability to obtain

  • Minimum of 4-8 years of experience.

  • Co-op/Internship experience preferred.

  • Travel/ field work 25-50% of the time

Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Has the responsibility for providing corporate fire protection engineering services in both programmatic and technical matters. Works with corporate and line management in the development and/or interpretation of fire protection policy and standards as applied to the protection of life, property loss prevention, and the interruption of business operations. Works closely with architects and engineers by providing fire protection engineering consultation for the design of new commercial and power generating facilities and for fire protection improvements to existing facilities. Conducts risk assessments to evaluate the potential for loss of life and property damage from the threat of fire and other similar perils. Provides project management and engineering services for multimillion-fire protection upgrade projects. Responsible as fire protection expert in matters such as life safety, property protection and industrial loss prevention. Has routine contact with senior level managers at both the corporate offices and at the power plants. Duties in more detail include: * Performs the most difficult fire protection audits of TVA fossil and nuclear plants, sites and facilities. Work consists of evaluating systems, programs and facilities for compliance with NRC and other regulatory requirements and adequacy of designs and administrative controls, etc. * Performs complex fire risk assessments using probability based and recognized industry based methodologies to assist management in developing operational and planning business decisions. * Provides testing and detailed evaluation of system performance for fire protection systems and life safety features and associated equipment at commercial, power generating, power distribution facilities. * Reviews design drawings and specifications to ensure an optimal, cost effective level of fire protection is provided. * Uses extensive experience and sound engineering judgment to formulating innovative and cost effective solutions to difficult fire protection problems, including system designs. * Performs project management and engineering functions for multimillion fire protection improvement projects to ensure that contractor designed and installed systems meet all contractual technical specifications, are tested and meet all acceptable performance criteria, and systems are completed on schedule and within budget. * Provides training for plant personnel in operation and maintenance of new fire protection systems. * Investigates large loss and other unusual fire loss incidents for determination of causal factors that may prevent future incidents. * Available as a technical service resource providing expeditious technical assistance in areas of life safety , fire protection engineering, loss prevention, code compliance and other related subjects to all TVA engineers and managers upon request. Supervision Received Supervision and guidance are provided by the department manager and are generally limited to overall objectives, general guidelines, and work priorities. Incumbent plans and executes the work with minimal supervision. Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific) Comprehensive knowledge and in-depth ability to use fire protection engineering theory, principles, practices and state-of-the-art technology. Must be multi-task oriented, have excellent written and oral communication skills, and demonstrate excellent analytical, creative problem solving, customer focus, and leadership skills.
