As a Geologist/Geophysicist intern, you will become an immediate asset to Hess by working relevant projects while enhancing your skill set. There will be involvement in projects with significant impact in one or more of the following Business Unit areas:

  • Exploration Groups: Offshore Gulf of Mexico, Offshore Atlantic Margins, Renewal

  • Onshore and Offshore Prodcution of Hess Oil / Gas Fields


Working alongside a designated Geoscience Mentor you will have the opportunity to work on projects which may include the following:

  • Compile, interpret and integrate geophysical/geological data for regional scale interpretations, prospect generation or lease evaluation

  • Integrate petrophysical and geological information to investigate and develop different rock physics relationships at both regional and field development scales

  • Utilize computer workstations to enhance accuracy of geoscience interpretations by applying processing, modeling, 2D & 3D seismic mapping, attribute analysis, and utility software as necessary



  • Possess a high level of achievement within a Geosciences academic program

  • Possess a foundation of fundamental geology principles and skills

  • Intellectual curiosity

  • Possess an above average level of understanding of the E&P Industry

  • Internships are 12 weeks during the summer months


  • Master's or PhD in geoscience-related field (in progress)

VIEW JOBS 1/10/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-04-10T00:00 The Geoscience Data Lead (GDL) is a Houston-based member of the Data Management and Analytics (DMA) organization and a core part of the Subsurface Data Management Team (SDMT). This position will serve as the lead, subject matter expert and primary point of contact for subsurface project data management (SPDM). Core responsibilities for this role are to ensure technical data required by technical users of project applications and databases such as the Landmark R5000 suite, Schlumberger Petrel, Petrel Studio and other similar applications, is correct, current and uniform across applications, databases and domains. This role will guide and lead business specialists in the area of subsurface data management best practices, policies, procedures and data standards. In addition, this role will be called to lead major initiatives that directly or indirectly impact the project environment and associated data. This role will liaise with business leadership to ensure their needs and requirements are understood by DMA and SDMT leadership, and appropriately incorporated into subsurface data management planning. The GDL will play a key role in defining and implementing a governance model to drive long term sustainability of data management solutions and data quality. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Provide leadership, guidance and support for subsurface project data and data management. * Subject matter expert, gate-keeper and primary point of contact for technical data and data management within project applications and databases including but not limited to Landmark OpenWorks, Landmark EDM, Petrel, Petrel Studio and GGX * Technical data loading, validation and integration of data within project databases * Participate in and lead data management projects that impact the project environment * Drive compliance of approved data standards, process standards, guidelines and policies for technical data, data management and data quality management * Ensure technical data loaded to project applications and database has been validated, is in the correct repository and is received in at the right time to support key business processes * Liaise with Central Data Management Team to ensure critical and master data is correctly integrated with project databases * Monitor the project environment for acceptable levels of data quality and report areas of non-compliance to Source System Owners and DMA-Data Management leadership * Lead definition and documentation of governance policies, data and process standards for project data to ensure long-term sustainability of data quality * Lead community of practice for technical project data and data management * Keep abreast of industry trends in the space of technical data management Basic * Bachelor of Science degree in Geoscience, Engineering, Data Management/Science or equivalent experience * 10 years of experience managing oil and gas geoscience, drilling and engineering technical data * 5 years of experience loading surface and subsurface technical data in geoscience interpretation software packages like Landmark OpenWorks R5000, Schlumberger Petrel or similar software Advanced * Advanced knowledge of well data lifecycle from exploration through to development, drilling and completion, production and eventual abandonment or relinquishment * Subject Matter Expert loading and validating well data including well headers, deviation surveys, logs, geologic tops, check-shots, VSPs, and other common data types such as lease and seismic data * Excellent understanding of master data management concepts for petrotechnical data * Advanced knowledge triaging technical data issues with ability to distinguish differences between software, hardware and platform related issues to enable root cause definition * Experience leading project data management programs in a Landmark R5000 OW and Schlumberger Petrel environment * Excellent knowledge of geodetics and subsurface units of measure common to technical data * Subject Matter Expertise integrating data into R5000 OpenWorks and Petrel * Working knowledge industry standard data quality management tools and methodologies * Experience defining or implementing governance processes with clear lines of ownership, responsibility and accountability for data stewardship and ownership Behavioral * Ability to lead initiatives, project teams and influence stakeholder buy-in for technical data management standards, processes and policies * Self-driven individual that can multi-task and deliver on commitments * Ability to lead projects and meet deliverables in alignment with time, budget and resource constraints * Excellent analytical and problem solving skills * Excellent leadership and organizational skills * Open-minded individual able to identify new methodologies and technologies for managing technical data * Excellent team player that can work independently under minimal supervision when required * Experience supporting and mentoring business unit personnel in data management best practice * Effective team player who takes an active role in team responsibilities * Strong verbal and written communication skills.
