Specific Responsibilities

The Operations Geologist Sr, for Apache Corporation will be a member of Apache's Operations Geology team at the company's Houston office, reporting to the Operations Geology Sr Manager.

This role will be primarily responsible for the following:

  • Work closely both with the office based team, and the remote rig site teams to focusing on safe and successful well delivery.

  • Responsible for proactively identifying all drilling and completions hazards including but not limited to, shallow water and gas flows, depleted and loss zones, potential high pressure zones, faults, geomechanical hazards etc.

  • Provide support to the drilling group during well control, stuck pipe and other operational events

  • Identify ideas to improve drilling efficiency.

  • Significant experience in unconventional basins (particularly the Permian Basin) including drilling practices, innovations and the behavior of different geologic target horizons.

  • Preferred experience across other diverse areas of the industry e.g. exploration, appraisal, development, conventional oil plays, conventional gas plays, offshore, deepwater, clastics & carbonate reservoirs in varied geographical basins.

  • Extensive experience in geomechanics and wellbore stability including predrill prediction, real-time monitoring, prevention and mitigation of related hazards.

  • Highly familiar with other subsurface hazards identification and mitigation including shallow hazards.

  • Drive technological innovation such as AI and machine learning.

  • Strong knowledge of drilling & geological analytics tools to monitor and proactively avoid potential drilling hazards and lost time incidents.

  • Train and mentor colleagues.

  • Provide council as operational issues occur.

  • Capture hazards, learnings, and optimizations to increase operational efficiency.

  • Working knowledge of geosteering techniques and best practices.

  • Flexibility to work unsociable hours if operations dictate.

Qualifications & Experience

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:

  • MSc. in a petroleum geology discipline.

  • At least 15 years of experience, including technical assignments.

  • High level technical understanding across a broad spectrum of Oil & Gas functions including Geology, Drilling, Petrophysics, Geophysics, Reservoir Engineering & Geochemistry.

  • Acts as a focal point between these diverse functions.

  • Highly familiar with all methods of subsurface data acquisition across different disciplines including Mudlogging, LWD/MDW, Wireline, Coring & Well Testing.

  • Experience in managing 3rd party contracts & performance.

  • Expertise in Geomechanics and Wellbore Stability.

  • Proficient in Shallow Hazards & Site Survey planning.

  • Knowledge in Pore Pressure (prediction & monitoring).

  • Skilled in Geosteering long reach or horizontal wells.

  • Operational experience in challenging drilling environments such a frontier or remote locations or extreme operating limits like High Temperature / High pressure.

  • Experience in Petrophysical Log interpretation.

  • Familiar with Seismic interpretation techniques.

  • Proficient using technical software such as Gravitas, GEO, Petrel & Rokdoc.
