Main Purpose of Job

The Geologist I is an entry-level position and will serve
in the Groundwater Discharge Permit Division of the Water and Science
Administration.�� The incumbent in the
position will learn to process less complex industrial and municipal facilities
(individual and general) groundwater discharge permit applications, draft
permit requirements, and manage the permit project through the final decision
to issue or deny a permit.� The work may
include reviewing the project's hydrogeologic report and onsite system design,
evaluating groundwater quality requirements and treatment systems, preparing
the groundwater discharge permit, fact sheets, public notices, and written
responses to comments, meeting with applicants and interested parties,
conducting and participating in public meetings, and issuing the discharge
permits.� This work may also include
general permit development assignments and working closely with compliance
staff on issues involving violations of State groundwater regulations.
The working conditions of this position are as
follows:�

Work involves exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. Regular site
visits of wastewater treatment plants where unpleasant odors always exist.

Work involves exposure
to hazardous conditions which may result in injury. ��Site visits might involve exposure to
hazardous conditions and contain the potential for injury.

Work involves special
physical demands such as lifting 50 pounds or more, climbing ladders, etc.� Site visits might involve climbing ladders or
traversing somewhat rough terrain.�

Work requires the use of
protective equipment such as goggles, gloves, masks, etc.� Protective equipment such as steel-toe shoes
and hard hats may sometimes be required during site visits.

This position requires the incumbent to drive a State vehicle.� If you maintain an out-of-state driver license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of appointment.� Individuals must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving record in order to drive a State vehicle.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�� A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.
Experience: None.
Note:�Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service�experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a�commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for- year basis for the required education.�

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the
following:� � � �

Involvement in an environmental internship, an environmental stewardship
program, community� meetings, community improvement projects, or volunteer
work in any environmental field;

Trained or experience in groundwater remediation, and or sampling or soil or groundwater;

Experience preparing environmental technical reports;�

Experience in conducting field inspections or surveys in any environmental discipline.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
2.When assigned to an environmental program at the Maryland Department of the Environment, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1.Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.
2.Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards

  • 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.
    3.Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

PERSONAL LEAVE - New State employees are awarded six (6) personal leave days annually (prorated based on start date)
