Solano Community College District is a single college district that serves one of the most ethnically and racially diverse counties in California. Located on the ancestral lands of the Patwin people, Solano Community College's Fairfield campus is in the heart of Suisun Valley midway between San Francisco and Sacramento. We also serve students at two centers in Vallejo and Vacaville, at Travis Air Force Base, and at three correctional facilities. Our many innovative programs are supported by state-of-the-art facilities, including a brand-new library and learning center.

ABOUT THE MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCES DIVISION:

Our science facilities, support staff, faculty, and administration are aligned to foster student success for many decades to come. As part of the overall college offerings, the mathematics and sciences division schedules courses in astronomy, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, engineering, geography, geology, horticulture, mathematics, physical science, physics, and water/waste water technology. The state-of-the-art facilities in Vacaville and Fairfield are packed full with modern equipment and experienced educators and support staff. Furthermore, the college has plans to expand the offerings in Vallejo in Fall 2023. Each of these locations houses courses taught by faculty in the Mathematics and Sciences division.

ABOUT THE GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT:

The Geography Department offers the majors transfer degree to CSU students and teaches general education courses. Fall 2024 recruitments are now active and we are looking for experienced professionals to teach all areas of geography. However, our current immediate need is for Cultural Geography and World Geography courses. In your cover letter, please address any specific areas of expertise. JOB DESCRIPTION:

Solano Community College is seeking a pool of qualified applicants for possible temporary part-time teaching assignments in the geography department. In general, we may have a need in any area of geography instruction during any semester including summer. The start months are August, January, and June in each year. These positions are filled on an as needed basis and are on-going recruitments. Assignments may include day, evening and weekend courses. The district may cancel classes or change instructors as enrollment needs are determined. Skilled candidates who can demonstrate a variety of teaching strategies is strongly encouraged to apply.

Paid office hours are available to adjunct faculty in fall and spring semesters who teach a 40% assignment or more.

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide instruction in multiple areas of geography in accordance with established instructional and administrative requirements as outlined in the Faculty Handbook.

  • Evaluate and provide timely verbal and written assessments of student performance.

  • Prepare and grade assignments and examinations

  • Meet administrative timelines and submit completed reports and required documents

  • Maintain required student attendance, scholastic records, and other related materials.

  • Maintain current knowledge and skills in geology and physical science.

  • Maintain effective communication with peers, staff, students, and administrators.

  • Participate in the assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLO) and Program Level Outcomes (PLO).

  • Actively participate in department/school meetings and maintain regular office hours - adjuncts are not required to do these two things but are encouraged to do them with additional pay in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College and School policies.

  • Voluntary participation in college-wide committee work and collegial governance is encouraged and, in some cases, paid in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

  • Teaching assignments may include evening and weekend hours, and off-campus instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College and School policies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Math and Science.

Candidates must possess:

A commitment to encouragement of learning and an enthusiastic attitude toward student learning; sensitivity to students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds who may have wide ranges of abilities.

AND

Master's in geography

OR

Bachelor's in geography AND Master's in geology, history, meteorology or oceanography OR the equivalent.

Equivalency is defined as possessing the general education for the degree and the major coursework for the degree. The equivalency request form is included in the application. NOTE: All degrees must be from accredited institutions.

The successful candidate is a broadly trained individual who possesses both depth and breadth of knowledge in major areas of geography; has an approachable personality; and adheres to college academic requirements and standards, especially laboratory safety.

Understanding and practice of addressing student equity through best-practice teaching methodologies; uses multiple teaching methods that include critical thinking and problem-solving strategies.

Use computers, multimedia, course-management software, and other interactive technologies as teaching and learning tools.

Demonstrate ability to utilize multiple teaching methods/strategies needed to address the diverse learning styles/need of students including integration of interactive technologies to enhance critical thinking and problem-solving strategies.

Possess a commitment to teaching and learning and provide a supportive learning environment to enhance student success and completion.

Demonstrate an ability to self-evaluate and effect change for personal growth and improvement, as well as an ability to accept constructive feedback and effect change appropriately and participate in professional growth and development activities and lifelong learning.
