Geographical Information Systems Technician

JOB TITLE: Geographical Information Systems Technician CLASS: 54

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB: This is a responsible position involving technical and clerical skills. Under direct supervision of the GIS Manager, this position will assist in the maintenance of, and provide support for the existing geographic information system.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Utilize geographic information systems (GIS) hardware and software to integrate data into the GIS; extensive database entry and editing of map layers; design and produce web maps. Utilize GPS to locate new and existing infrastructure; upload, perform quality control and import the GPS data in the GIS. Prepare hardcopy and web-based maps as needed to support various activities and departments within the City. Instruct and provide support for city personnel regarding the use of GIS hardware and software. Work both in the office and outdoors.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor degree in geography, cartography or related field. A combination of experience with high school diploma or equivalent GED may be substituted.

• Possess a valid Kentucky Driver's License.

• Ability to read, write legibly and communicate effectively in English.

• Ability to follow written and oral directions and instructions.

• Physically capable of performing essential job functions.

• Computer literate.

• Experience with ArcGIS desktop and enterprise software.

• Ability to meet and communicate with the public in an effective and tactful manner.

• Neat in appearance, of good moral character, and not convicted of a felony crime.

• Pass drug screening test.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Perform specific duties as defined in "Example of Duties".

• Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Operate surveying and GPS equipment.

• Read engineering plans and maps.

• Maintain organized files for maps, field work and other data.

• Capture infrastructure features using GPS in various locations throughout the City, including survey sites and construction zones.

• Work overtime as required by supervisor.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.
