Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist for Hydrographic Surveys within the Galveston Office, and provide oversight for planning, development, implementation, and management of GIS mapping and digital databases in support of surveying needs.
Provide assistance to project managers, engineers, and scientists in acquiring and compiling geospatial databases. Perform Quality Assurance and Quality Control to ensure metadata and data standards compliance, documentation, and maintenance.
The position requires professional knowledge in a variety of physical and biological sciences to develop, interpret, and analyze data bases used in integrated management of installation natural and cultural resources.
You will gather, input, interpret, analyze, and prepare data on a wide variety of factors impacting on environmental and ecological conditions;
Interpret and evaluate historical and current data to project future impacts and analyze trends; and utilize a variety of computer hardware and software, especially ArcMap, ArcPro, AGOL, Hypack, and other 3D modeling softwares.
Create GIS datasets, generate reports, statistical summaries, digital/hardcopy maps, digital images, and other customer-request products by researching and acquiring data.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for GEOGRAPHER:
Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes meeting 2 of the 3: 1.) Utilizing geographic methods, practices and techniques to define mapping and/or survey project requirements. 2.) Recommend alterations or improvements to resolve discrepancies with mapping and/or survey projects. 3.) Use a Geographic Information System (GIS) database for proper storing, correction, analysis, mapping, archiving, retrieval and/or reporting.
OR Have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as GEOGRAPHY or related field. OR Have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have at least two years of graduate education as described in B, but less than the required three years.
