Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Genetic Counselor (1.0 FTE, Day Shift) to work in Swedish Cancer Institute Professional Svc at Swedish First Hill in Seattle, WA.

The Genetic Counselor counsels patients at risk for hereditary cancer. Acts as a consultant/resource for patients and physicians..

In this position you will:

  • Reviews patient's family history and explains hereditary risks; counsels regarding cancer and related hereditary risk factors.

  • Advises patients of screening procedures and prevention strategies.

  • Provides health care providers with referral information and discussion about hereditary cancers and diagnostic testing.

  • Provides genetic counseling for breast cancer, colon cancer, and other hereditary cancers.

  • Coordinates genetic tests with other centers and labs as necessary.

  • Provides follow-up to referring physicians and patients regarding test results, summaries of consultation sessions, and appropriate recommendations.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree from a genetic counseling training program approved by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

  • Well rounded experience dealing with genetic disorders including: cancer risk assessment; ordering and interpreting genetic test results; and providing psychosocial assessment and support.

  • Board Certified in genetic counseling by the American Board of Medical Genetics or American Board of Genetic Counseling within 18 months of hire.

  • Valid genetic counseling license from the Washington State Department of Health required.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • 1 year experience working with patients at risk for hereditary cancer.

The Transgenic Technology team within the Molecular Genetics department at the Allen Institute for Brain Science generates high-precision genetic tools to effectively identify, monitor, and manipulate distinct cell types within the mouse brain. These genetic tools enable the analysis of the structure and function of neural circuits and represent foundational resources for the neuroscience community. We seek an exceptional experimentalist who will generate and characterize new genetic tools for the adult mouse brain and beyond to support internal efforts and a newly awarded BRAIN grant from the NIMH. The candidate will be a Ph.D. graduate in neuroscience, molecular genetics or cell biology and will possess strong experimental and analytical skills. Job Responsibilities: * Analyze mouse single cell data (scRNAseq or scATACseq) to identify candidate genes or regulatory elements for tool development * Design and generate targeting vectors and adeno-associated vectors (AAVs) to support production efforts * Collect and critically analyze transgene expression data to validate newly developed transgenic lines and viral tools * Identify and test novel molecular components and strategies to refine genetic approaches * Work with research and support teams to help manage characterization pipelines and our genetic tool portfolio * Write and publish manuscripts, grant and internal progress reports and grant applications * Present work internally and externally at conferences * Meet production deadlines Required Qualifications: * Ph.D. in life sciences (i.e. Neurobiology, Genetics, Biochemistry or related discipline) * Deep experience performing molecular cloning techniques and with DNA construction software (Geneious or Vector NTI) and genomics analysis tools * Knowledgeable about mouse neuroanatomy and histological methods (immunohistochemistry, epifluorescence and confocal imaging, FISH and DFISH) * Knowledgeable about mouse genetics and genome engineering methods (CRISPR and RCME) * Knowledgeable about AAV production procedures and tittering methods (ddPCR) * Experience performing stereotaxic injections of viruses into the mouse brain * Ability to work at the bench >80% of the time Preferred Qualifications: * Strong publication record * Outstanding oral and written communication skills * Ability to work independently and within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment to meet aggressive timelines * Positive attitude, self-motivated, and ability to trouble-shoot * Experience with any programming languages (R or Python) preferred It is the policy of the Allen Institute to provide equal employment opportunity (EEO) to all persons regardless of age, color, national origin, citizenship status, physical or mental disability, race, religion, creed, gender, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, genetic information, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law.
