The essential duties for a General Transportation Tech I & II include:

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.

  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.

  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.

  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guardrails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

  • Drives a state vehicle to move/pick up litter and roadway debris.

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional responsibilities to qualify for a General Transportation Tech II include:

  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.

  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.

  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.

Competencies

The required competencies for a General Transportation Tech I & II include:

  • Communicate effectively

  • Follow verbal and written instructions

  • Move up to 50 pounds and occasionally move up to 100 pounds (See job requisition essential duties/remarks for examples of items to be moved.)

  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures

  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes

  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files and reports

  • The use of applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade

  • The use of light and heavy highway equipment

Additional competencies to qualify for a General Transportation Tech II include:

  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance

  • The use of personal computers and applicable programs, applications and systems

Education

This job requires the following for a General Transportation Tech I or General Transportation Tech II:

  • None in formal education

Work Experience

This job requires the following:

General Transportation Tech I:

  • No experience required

General Transportation Tech II:

  • 1 year in Engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment

operation or roadway maintenance work.

  • (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)

  • No supervisory experience required.

  • No substitution

Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for a General Transportation Tech I or General Transportation Tech II:

  • Safety Impact Certificate, issued by TxDOT at time of hire

  • Valid Class C Drivers License, at time of application Will be required to obtain a Class A CDL within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

  • Other Conditions:

  • This is a Safety Impact and Commercial Driver position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Additional conditions for this position:

  • Safety Impact certifications are not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact and Commercial Driver certification(s) will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

  • Must have or obtain within 120 calendar days from date of employment a Commercial Driver License Class A.

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver, safety impact and vessel crewmember positions. Commercial drivers, safety impact employees and vessel crewmembers will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.

  • Required to work weekends and holidays.

  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
