The essential duties for this job include:

General Transportation Tech I:

  • Drives to assist in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.

  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.

  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly-skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

  • Learns to operate heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.

  • Learns to operate light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II:

In addition to the duties of a General Transportation Tech I:

  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.

  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.

  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech III:

In addition to the duties of a General Transportation Tech I and II:

  • Inspects bridges and related structures and evaluates condition in accordance with the bridge inspection Manual to determine the need for replacement, rehabilitation or maintenance.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

The required competencies for this job include:

General Transportation Tech I, II, or III:

  • Communicate effectively

  • Follow verbal and written instructions

  • Work in cramped spaces (bend, stoop, crawl) and at varied heights

  • Move up to 50 pounds and occasionally move up to 100 pounds (See job requisition essential duties/remarks for examples of items to be moved.)

  • The use of basic mathematical fundamentals

  • The use of applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade

  • The use of light and heavy highway equipment

  • Maintaining a safe working relationship

Work Experience

This job requires the following:

General Transportation Tech I:

  • none

General Transportation Tech II:

  • 1 year in Engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation or roadway maintenance work.

  • (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

  • No supervisory experience required.

  • No Substitution

General Transportation Tech III:

  • 3 years in Engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation or roadway maintenance work.

  • (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

  • No supervisory experience required.

Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:

  • Valid Driver License

  • Must have or obtain within 120 calendar days from date of employment a Commercial Driver License Class A with an "N" endorsement.

  • Safety Impact Certificate*

  • Commercial Driver Certificate*

  • Safety Impact certifications are not required at the time of application. Safety Impact and Commercial Driver certifications will be issued by TxDOTat the time of hire.*

Other Conditions:

  • This is a Safety Impact position (either Safety Impact, Commercial Driver and/or Vessel Crew Member) and will be subject to random drug testing.

Additional Conditions:

  • Must have or obtain within 120 calendar days from date of employment a Commercial Driver License Class A.

  • In addition to the Commercial Driver License, the employee must have or obtain within 120 calendar days of employment the N endorsement on their CDL.

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver, safety impact and vessel crewmember positions. Commercial drivers, safety impact employees and vessel crewmembers will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.

  • Required to work weekends and holidays.

  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis.
