General Mechanic Trainee - Facilities Management

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties at the skilled level to maintain and repair University buildings, structures and their attendant equipment. The incumbent will support the mission statement of Duquesne University. The incumbent may be required to perform duties not specifically listed within this job description based on an immediate need and the employee's individual abilities to assure the safe and efficient operation of the University.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitors, maintains, and performs basic repairs to building electrical systems such as fixtures, switches and outlets; assist licensed electricians with advanced repairs as appropriate.

Monitors performance of HVAC systems for the facility; performs basic repair/replacement of components, as appropriate, including filter changing and cleaning of units.

Monitors and performs basic maintenance of plumbing systems, to include standard repair of leaking faucets, cleaning obstructed waste lines, and performing basic modifications to plumbing and water supply systems; assist licensed plumbers, as appropriate.

Performs carpentry maintenance tasks including routine drywall repair, window repair, cabinet repair, door hardware installation and painting.

Ensures proper care in the use of maintenance equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

Performs snow removal and spreading salt related to building access and hazardous walkways as assigned.

Notifies supervisor of unusual conditions.

Assists outside contractors and vendors with tasks such as utility isolation and work area access to allow for the completion of their work as required.

Picks up of basic materials from Facilities Management.

Completes other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum qualifications:

Valid driver's license.

High school diploma or equivalent required.

A minimum of two (2) year' experience in building maintenance and /or construction with basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems related to buildings.

Must be in good physical condition to perform the daily work assignments that are inherent in this job description, further examples are; lift and manipulate objects weighing up to 70 pounds regularly and the ability to perform work from ladders, scaffolding and elevated surfaces.

Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Basic and general building maintenance methods, techniques, materials and equipment.

Basic mechanical principles.

Basic electrical principles.

Basic computer skills.

Building and facilities maintenance, safety and awareness of security issues.

The occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Follows basic and routine verbal and written instructions.

Understands and follows specific instructions and procedures.

Reads, understands, follows, and suggests safety procedures.

Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Works as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment.

Safely uses hand and power tools applicable to the trade.

Safely and efficiently operate, maintain, and repair equipment, machinery, and tools normally used within your work environment.

Perform a variety of routine and preventive building maintenance tasks to include, but not limited to, hot water systems, tile and flooring, and minor repairs to appliances.

Avoids confrontational situations and report all incidents to Facilities Management.

Integrity and dependability.
