The General Manager of Health and Safety at Superior Plus Propane reports to the Head of Superior Plus Propane and is a member of the senior leadership team, responsible for developing, implementing, and managing health and safety programs to ensure the safety and well-being of all employees, customers, and stakeholders. The incumbent will direct, manage and coach a team of direct and indirect employees to achieve these goals and will represent the Company when dealing with regulatory authorities and participate in/on industry associations and boards. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and extensive experience in health and safety.

Role and Responsibilities

1.Leadership and Strategy:

o Through a proactive approach, develop and execute a comprehensive health and safety strategy aligned with the company's business goals.

o Provide leadership and direction to the health and safety team, fostering a proactive and continuous improvement culture with accountability for Health & Safety performance.

o Collaborate with senior management to integrate health and safety considerations into business decisions and processes.

o Develop, implement and manage strategic companywide programs and initiatives related to health, safety and training, such as behavioral based observation, incident investigation, PPE, etc.

2.Policy and Compliance:

o Ensure compliance with all local, state, federal, and industry-specific health and safety regulations.

o Develop and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.

o Monitor and report on the effectiveness of health and safety initiatives and compliance status.

o Direct the activation of emergency contingency plans. Resolve issues and problems by determining the root cause and taking pro-active steps to prevent future occurrences.

3.Risk Management:

o Identify, assess, and prioritize health and safety risks across the organization.

o Implement risk mitigation strategies and emergency response plans.

o Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments to ensure a safe working environment.

4.Training and Development:

o Design and implement comprehensive safety training programs for all employees, including new hires and ongoing refresher courses.

o Promote safety awareness through regular communication, workshops, and safety meetings.

o Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and make necessary adjustments.

5.Incident Management:

o Lead investigations into health and safety incidents, accidents, and near-misses.

o Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to address root causes.

o Report and communicate incident findings and lessons learned to relevant stakeholders.

6.Performance Monitoring:

o Establish and track key health and safety performance indicators (KPIs).

o Analyze data and trends to identify areas for improvement.

o Prepare and present regular health and safety performance reports to senior management and the board of directors.

7.Stakeholder Engagement:

o Serve as the primary point of contact for health and safety matters with regulatory agencies, industry bodies, and external partners.

o Have a targeted presence in supporting and strengthening the work being performed in Field Operations.

o Represent the company in health and safety forums, conferences, and industry associations.

o Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support health and safety initiatives.

o Collaborate across the Superior Plus family of businesses with Health & Safety Leads to improve overall functional operations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Certifications, Endorsements and Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in health and safety management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.

  • In-depth knowledge of health and safety regulations, standards, and best practices.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.

  • Proven track record of successfully managing health and safety programs in a complex, multi-site organization.

  • Exceptional knowledge and understanding of pertinent federal, state and local regulatory codes including DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, NFPA, CETP and building codes.

  • Ability to travel as needed.
