Position Summary:

In support of the Agency's mission, this position maintains the general ledger and works with financial and grant accounting tasks, engaging/apprising the Director of Finance as needed in a timely manner. This position provides guidance for accounting functions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. This position also supports audit activities/working papers, maintains the accounting system, and completes special projects as assigned. This position promotes, participates, and supports a smoothly functioning finance and accounting department which demonstrates responsible stewardship of resources, ensuring that financial and business operations are responsive to agency needs. Position may serve as supervisor to other team members as assigned by the Director of Finance.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries for accruals and variances.

  • Reconcile accounts with the general ledger.

  • Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations. Research and work with appropriate staff to resolve outstanding items for accounts, including cash accruals, accounts payables, accounts receivables, payroll, and fixed assets.

  • Update and maintain the fixed asset schedule.

  • Coordinate month-end and year-end closing activities.

  • Collaborate with internal departments to gather, analyze and interpret financial information.

  • Maintain the chart of accounts.

  • Ensure revenue and expense transactions are booked in accordance with the Federal Acquisition Regulations, particularly 2 CFR Part 200 - (OMB) Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards.

  • Perform internal audits on financial data.

  • Coordinate with the outside auditors for the yearly financial audit and the Single Audit (Subpart F of the OMB Uniform Guidance).

  • Drive implementation and maintenance of accounting processes that meet government requirements and company policies and procedures.

  • Become an expert in the financial system to ensure accurate transaction tracking and reporting.

  • Maintain the functional/accounting aspects of the financial system.

  • Work actively in the development, revision/enhancement of existing and potentially new financial accounting systems.

  • Support budgeting and forecasting activities.

  • Assist staff with accounting issues and queries.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of finance and accounting processes.

  • Keep abreast of regulatory requirements and accounting best practices for non-profits and government contractors.

Marginal Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Other marginal functions and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Education/Training/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field and a minimum of three or Associate degree with five years experience in general ledger accounting.

  • Working knowledge and demonstrated proficiency with integrated accounting systems.

  • Proven ability to handle confidential information.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills in Excel and other Microsoft products.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

  • Ability to manage time effectively to complete work assignments.

  • Ability to work independently as well as to work successfully with a team acting as a first point of contact in problem solving.

  • Ability to multi-task, while demonstrating a high level of organization and attention to detail along with the ability to solve problems as they arise.

Preferred:

  • Experience with nonprofit accounting preferred.

  • Experience with government contracting preferred.

  • Experience in a multi-program service, multi-funded environment.

  • Knowledge of Federal and State cost principles.

Required Physical Demands of Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Most work is conducted in an office environment with moderate to extensive phone use.

  • Extensive use of video terminal and keyboarding.

  • In normal work day, may stand/walk 3 hrs/day; may sit 6 hrs/day; may drive __1 hrs/week; may use hands for repetitive grasping, pushing and pulling, typing and fine manipulation 6 hrs/day; may use hands at or above shoulder level for 1 hrs/day.

  • In normal work day, may bend, squat, and/or climb frequently.

  • Work is light in nature, lifting maximum of 20 lbs.

  • Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 lbs.

  • May require walking or standing to a significant degree, or sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
