General Laborers Hostlers are responsible for safely unloading & strategically moving intermodal containers within a railyard.

Responsibilities

General Laborer Hostler

  • Acts as a spotter between heavy equipment operators; Top Loaders, Hostlers, Cranes, etc.

  • Climbs up & down rail car ladders to lock & unlock intermodal containers

  • Drives Hostler (in railyard) to transport and store intermodal containers to & from trackside

  • Moves intermodal containers from railcars to trailers via Top Loaders, Side Loaders, Cranes, etc.

  • Complies with all safety, attendance, operations & training guidelines/programs

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Ability to lift 50lbs.

  • Physically & mentally able to climb railcars, 20 feet

  • Experience operating heavy equipment is a plus; Crane, Top Loader, Hostler, Forklift, etc

  • Open availability required; all Shifts, Holidays & Weekends, schedule changes based on demand

  • Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

  • Willingness to complete a criminal background, drug screen and physical

ROLE SUMMARY: The General Laborer, Fleet Operations is a field based position, responsible for safely and efficiently supporting crew members who operate and maintain the railroad maintenance machines in accordance to guidelines set forth by the FRA, our customers, and Loram Maintenance of Way, INC. (Loram). COMPENSATION: THIS POSITION STARTS AT $15.00 PER HOUR FOR NEW HIRES Time and a half is paid after 40 hours per week. Typical work hours are 12-14 hours per day and 70-75 hours per week. Hours may be longer or shorter depending on operational needs. Room for advancement: 90% of General Laborers who are employed with the company for 2 years receive a promotion in that time and 50% will have received at least 2 promotions. Employees are responsible for all personal expenses including, but not limited to, food, phone and laundry. Loram does pay for hotel/motel rooms and all work-related travel to and from the job site (flights, buses, etc.). QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: 1 – 2 Years: Demonstrated technical skills such as mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or machine operations 1 – 2 Years: Demonstrated ability to learn communicate verbally and in writing and learn best practices * Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
