Summary

This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Navajo Region, Division of Transportation, Branch of Road Maintenance in Fort Defiance, Arizona and Navajo, Arizona.

The incumbent provides a variety of general equipment operator leader duties maintaining BIA system roads, bridges, transit and transportation facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead others by assisting, providing instructions, training, or answering questions regarding work procedures and directives.

  • Operates machinery to repair and restoration of earth roads, graveled roads, paved roads and bridges.

  • Operates an assortment of power and pneumatic tools including diesel-powered air compressor, and air-powered tools.

  • Performs routine preventative maintenance and emergency service on equipment.

  • Attend meetings and training as required.

  • Strictly adheres to the Agency Safety Program, Continuity of Operations Plan and Spill Prevention and Counter Measures Plan.

  • Keep field records on equipment maintenance and operation.

  • Performs a variety of general labor duties in the preservation, repair and restoration of earth roads, graveled roads, paved roads and bridges.

WL-06: Ability to lead three or more other workers such as: Other General Equipment Operators, Mobile Equipment Servicer and Laborers specific road maintenance activities, developing monthly work schedules to distribute workload, inspect work in progress, train or instruct subordinate staff, and report to supervisor on status and progress of work. Additional examples include: working independently in a wide range of maintenance activities such as, channel maintenance; cattle guard clean-out and repair; culvert cleaning and replacement; curb, gutter and sidewalk maintenance; delineator maintenance; fence maintenance; guardrail maintenance; brush and tree removal; debris removal; repair spalling on concrete jersey barriers and approach slags; clean and/or replace expansion joints on bridge decks; trenching and excavation; etc. Perform routine preventative maintenance and emergency service on machinery, vehicles and power tools.

Physical Demands: Applicants must demonstrate that they are fully capable of performing strenuous work. Position requires average or above average strength, ability, and muscular endurance to perform assigned duties. Frequently carries, lifts, and supports items weighing up to 100 pounds and occasionally objects weighing approximately 150 pounds.

Working Conditions: The work is predominately outdoors and will expose the incumbent to all kinds of weather, on all kinds of terrain and works under hazardous/dangerous conditions with proper training requirements in place. Operator must adhere to proper dress standards.
