To plan, organize, staff, direct, and control the manpower, machinery, and materials needed for all production activities necessary to meet customer needs, at the lowest possible cost, while maintaining a union-free workplace. Reporting to the General Foreman are eight Production Supervisors, each responsible for a shift and/or operation. The Production Supervisors direct the work activities of approximately 190 non-union hourly employees. Primary Responsibilities Through the Production Supervisors the incumbent supervises the (describe operations/processes, i.e., bending, welding, assembly, testing and packaging) operations for the manufacture of all gas products. Through the front-line supervisors, the General Foreman coordinates the various operations to ensure proper workflow through the plant and is responsible for the quantity and quality of work. The incumbent monitors operating costs and ensures employee safety in the fabrication of the products. The incumbent establishes budgets on labor and operating costs for management approval. Some activities are covered by precedents, procedures and policies; other aspects require responding to new, unfamiliar or original situations, such as equipment breakdowns, material problems/shortages, scheduling interruptions, reclaim or scrap problems. The incumbent analyzes production forecasts and recommends scheduling to meet product demands. Manpower requirements are determined several months in advance based on schedule forecasts. The General Foreman conducts performance appraisals of the Production Supervisors, assists the Production Supervisors in performance evaluations of their subordinates, and prepares the salary planning budget for the entire production group. The incumbent is responsible for hire, discipline, and discharge activities in concurrence with Production Manager, Plant Manager, and plant and Corporate Human Resources. Maintaining a union-free environment is a critical part of the incumbent's managerial responsibility. The General Foreman resolves employee complaints in Step 2 of complaint procedure. The General Foreman also interacts with all plant department heads by providing and receiving advice/assistance on topics such as personnel policies, manufacturing, production or quality issues, etc. Specific Responsibilities * Meet daily production goals under established safety and quality standards. * Select, train and supervise staff and coordinate the activities within 12 departments on two shifts. * Plan labor requirements for production schedules; work closely with Production Control to assure timely changes and efficient use of people and equipment; work with Production Supervisors on departmental scheduling. * Control the manufacturing process according to approved methods and quality standards; assure that units are within standard costs using departmental labor reports from EDP. * Monitor production efficiencies; assist all aspects of maintaining or improving shop quality by enforcement of ISO 9002 policies and work instructions. * Allocate manufacturing and storage space. * Monitor shop cleanliness, participate in safety inspections.
