The GED Teacher is a civilian position that is responsible to provide instruction in various academic subjects to inmates who have not achieved a high school diploma.
Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Commander of Inmate Services and accountable for use of delegated authority.
Pursuant to §15.2-1603 of the Code of Virginia incumbent is appointed at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Instructs inmates the necessary lessons to pass the GED examination
Teaches and focuses on the five areas inmates are tested on such as writing, math, reading, social studies and science
Helps inmates improve how they process information and communication skills
Provides effective teaching methods in working with inmates to achieve their GED
Teaches critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
Prepares & modifies lesson plans
Evaluates inmates to determine readiness for testing in all content areas (reading, writing, social studies, math and science)
Administers pre-test and post-test TABE for inmates as needed
Tests students' abilities both formally and informally throughout sessions
Uses inmate assessments in program planning
Designs classes based on the learning needs of the inmates
Schedules GED testing for inmates who have been prepared for testing
Ensures that inmates are receiving their GED Certificates within a designated time frame
Maintains communications with supervisor about class activities and progress
Maintains inmate attendance forms and relays this information to the programs coordinator
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of GED laws, rules, regulations and policies governing education and teaching
Must have the ability to work with inmates from different cultures, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.
Must have the ability to motivate and communicate effectively
Experience teaching Adult Basic Education
Ability to work in a correctional environment; adheres to all HSO rules, regulations, policies, and procedures regarding inmates
Must have the ability to remain current with instructional methodologies and counseling techniques, appropriate testing procedures and interpretation of specific tests
Maintains relationships with local school systems
Must possess general knowledge of individual and group behavior in an institutional setting
Must have the ability to plan and schedule classes effectively
Must be patient, motivating, inspiring, organized and resourceful
Must travel to multiple sites to teach inmates
Must be able to work evenings
Must be dependable and meet attendance requirements
Must be able to work with males and females
Must be able to work in a confined facility
Acts rationally and calm under stressful situations
Utilizes good public relations skills
Use good leadership skills
Protects confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or writing
Prioritizes tasks
Properly operate authorized city vehicles and equipment
Understands legal rights of inmates, maintain inmates' safety and security
Makes sound decisions
Executes other responsibilities as relevant to this position
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must possess a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university; Must have previous teaching experience (Teaching certification preferred in Elementary, Secondary or Adult Education). Must maintain professional development courses to keep up with new or current teaching requirements and enhance skillsPERFORMANCE STANDARD

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, noise, fumes, odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, traffic and toxic or caustic chemicals. Risk of exposure to bio-hazard communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS
Must have the capability to hear, speak and see to communicate with the general public. Must have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move/push/pull or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs. Requires operation standard office equipment.
