Summary: The Gate Manager directs, administers and coordinates all Gate activities, to include Processing, TIR and Roadability, ensuring high levels of customer service, efficiency, productivity and safety as well as achievement of operational and financial goals and objectives.
Develop and maintain high operational standards by understanding customer needs, terms and conditions of contracts, developing plans to meet those needs, and ensuring that all gate personnel demonstrate customer service principles.
Assist in the development of and operates within approved fiscal budget limits.
Enforce area accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures. Provides regular training and on-going feed-back to staff and labor.
Keep Terminal Operations Manager informed of current operational issues along with appropriate solutions for improvement on a regular basis.
Responsible for the implementation of new gate technologies into the workplace, including the administration of all supporting operational or procedural modifications in accordance with such. Responsible for the management and control of jurisdictional boundaries surrounding the implementation of new technologies.
Maintain positive relations with labor and union officials through formal and informal meetings with labor, regular policy communication with staff, and maintaining a thorough knowledge of contracts and company policy.
Develop, communicate and maintain operating and administrative procedures (consistent with company procedures and objectives) that will ensure high levels of productivity.
Collaborate with Container Terminal staff engaged in space utilization and gate operations.
Assist Terminal Operations Manager in setting goals and objectives for the gate.
Resolve obstacles so that goals can be met.
Analyze Gate performance statistics and trends in order to identify areas for improvement.
Ensure work groups hold regular meetings with their staff.
Distribute information memorandums on current issues.
Practice management by walking around to observe and obtain feedback about conditions, issues, and general environment.
Ensure safe, efficient and productive planning and execution of operating plans. Regularly audit success and failures regarding operating plans, and establish corrective actions accordingly.
Work closely with the Terminal Maintenance and Repair Manager to ensure that gear and equipment are available and maintained at efficient and safe levels.
Complete other tasks as assigned.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
Knowledge of terminal operations, planning and stevedore operations.
5+ years of operations management experience.
Experience with computerized operating and financial systems.
Thorough knowledge of related union contracts and experience managing labor.
Thorough knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations, and related industry governmental regulations.
