Overview:

The Florida Gaming Control Commission ("FGCC") is charged with investigating and enforcing Florida pari-mutuel and gaming statutes and rules.

Position Responsibilities:

The Office of the General Counsel is seeking a Gaming Enforcement Legal Advisor to support FGCC's Division of Gaming Enforcement. The successful applicant will provide legal guidance to law enforcement officers throughout every step of their criminal investigative process, including, but not limited to, issuing and serving subpoenas, drafting constitutionally defensible search and arrest warrants, and advising on best practices for report writing. The Gaming Enforcement Legal Advisor will also advocate for the FGCC in all Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act proceedings and perform ongoing review of the Division of Gaming Enforcement's policies and procedures. The Gaming Enforcement Legal Advisor will work under the direction of the Deputy General Counsel.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of 4th amendment search and seizure law;

  • Skill in drafting legal documents;

  • Skill in managing multiple complex cases;

  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel;

  • Ability to prioritize work;

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment;

  • Ability to communicate effectively;

  • Ability to conduct legal research;

  • Ability to make oral presentations in court and in large groups;

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments;

  • Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques;

  • Ability to work independently;

  • Ability to manage a litigation case load;

  • Ability to recognize and act on emerging issues and shifting priorities;

  • Ability to adapt to changing work volume and variety and work efficiently under stressful situations; and

  • Ability to travel.

Required Qualifications:

  • Admission to the Florida Bar and four years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law or in administrative or judicial hearings, with at least one year of experience in criminal prosecution or criminal defense; and

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Misdemeanor or felony criminal trial experience;

  • Experience advising law enforcement agencies;

  • Experience advising law enforcement officers;

  • Experience with Florida's Contraband Forfeiture Act;

  • Experience reviewing search warrant applications;

  • Experience defending or attacking search warrants;

  • Experience drafting subpoenas;

  • Experience defending or attacking subpoenas; and

  • Experience reviewing police practices and procedures.
