SALARY GRADE: Grade 19 The Guardian ad Litem Supervisor is responsible for recruiting, screening, training, and supervising community volunteers assigned to advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children whose cases are before the district court.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Plans and facilitates the training program for prospective guardians ad litem (volunteers). Reviews juvenile petitions and assigns cases to guardians ad litem. Reassigns cases as necessary and appropriate.

Researches and requests pertinent information needed from other agencies and guides guardians ad litem with their investigation. Supports the attorney advocate in his/her role by conferring on case issues and ensuring necessary documents are prepared and available for court. Monitors and evaluates guardian ad litem performance.

Ensures child-clients have a guardian ad litem to advocate for their best interests at each court hearing. Manages assignment and reassignment of guardians ad litem. Coordinates court docket with juvenile clerks, guardians ad litem, and attorney advocates.

Creates and maintains a system for GAL and child-client case files consistent with GAL BEST Practice Guidelines. Inputs child-client and case data. May participate on statewide GAL project committees.

This position is stationed in the Catawba County Office, and extensive travel to Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties is required.Knowledge of: Guardian ad Litem program regulations, policies, and procedures; volunteer management; supervision techniques and practices; child abuse and neglect laws; trauma-informed practice; racial disproportionality; family systems theory; the district court process; community resources; interviewing techniques. Skills in: leading, coaching, and motivating guardians ad litem or staff; organizing an delegating work; analyzing and resolving problems; expressing ideas clearly in written and oral form; managing crisis situations calmly; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with attorneys, judicial officials, local agencies, media and the general public.

Ability to: supervise guardians ad litem and evaluate their performance; provide guidance to guardians ad litem in writing investigation plans, reports to the court, and make recommendations to the court in the best interest of children; provide creative leadership in recruiting, supervising, and maintaining guardians ad litem; speak effectively in public; clearly express ideas orally and in writing, establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Bachelor degree in business management, business administration, public administration, non-profit management or criminal justice; or a related field plus three (3) years of experience, with one year of experience managing staff or volunteers or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Management prefers a candidate who possesses strong skills in personnel management, organization, planning, technology and data reporting/analysis.
