DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Los Angeles Harbor College is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Studio Art Instructor commencing with the 2024-2025 academic year. We are looking for candidates who have the desire and ability to create a welcoming classroom culture that positively engages and impacts our diverse student population.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's in Fine Arts, Art, or Art History; OR
  • Bacholor's in any of the above AND Master's in Humanities;
  • OR The equivalent
  • A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

(NOTE: "Master's in fine arts" as used here refers to any master's degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also, art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the "Master of Fine Arts" (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing or other non-plastic arts.)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Teach the standard complement of art courses at the community college level (typically a 5-course load per semester).

2.Teach a schedule that can include nights, evenings, weekends, off campus sites, and online classes Abased on student demand and needs.

3.Maintain the minimum required student consultation hours as specified in the Faculty Union contract.

4.Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty from other departments and divisions.

5.Participate in program review and annual updates to program review.

6.Participate in curricular revision and development.

7.Conduct learning outcomes assessment, based on a variety of assignments and/or other assessment tools of differing formats.

8.Participate with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes and use the results to improve teaching and learning.

9.Participate in the development of resources, materials and strategies, including the use of multimedia technology to teach students in a multicultural environment.



  1. Serve as a representative at the discipline, division, and campus levels, including serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance and accreditation.

  2. Fulfill professional development activities according to institutional and contractual guidelines.

  3. Assist in purchasing art materials and maintain the inventory of art materials.

  4. Prepare and arrange art materials and art equipment in the classroom for students to use.

  5. Deliver lectures to students on art, art techniques and aesthetics.

  6. Give drawing and painting demonstrations to students to teach them art techniques.

  7. Instruct students in working in different drawing, painting and coloring techniques.

  8. Discuss various artistic approaches and traditions.

  9. Organize art exhibitions to display the artworks of students.

  10. Fulfill other duties as required.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Community college teaching experience.

  • Experience/background in Studio Art/Art History.

  • An excellent academic record that indicates a strong background in Art and related fields.

  • Experience/background in online teaching modalities.

  • Experience in working with student learning outcomes.

SALARY/BENEFITS:

The selected candidate will be rated into the salary schedule after hiring based upon experience and professional preparation. First year probationary faculty members are rated into a salary range of $72,990 to $135,620 or the 10-month academic year. The doctoral differential is $461 per month. An exceptional benefits package which includes medical, vision, dental and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.
