JOB DESCRIPTION

Middle or High School Teacher

Reports to: Principal

Supervises: N/A

Job Summary:
To provide high quality, active learning experiences for all students in a safe, caring, and respectful environment by implementing the essential functions listed below.

Essential Functions:
1.Plan developmentally appropriate lessons and learning activities that address the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCS). Appropriate planning includes:

  • Develop a yearly plan/pacing chart aligned to the NCSCS.

  • Design unit or weekly lesson plans that support the yearly plan.

  • Differentiate instructional plans for at-risk and for academically talented students.

  • Plan for appropriate materials use, field trips, and other special learning events that support and enhance instructional goals.

  • Prepare clear lesson plans and instructions for substitutes.
    2.Deliver well-organized, well-connected, smoothly flowing lessons that require active student participation and that students understand.
    3.Effectively manage student behavior.

  • Develop, teach, and implement a classroom management/student behavior plan.

  • Create a "respect for all" environment in the classroom and throughout the school.

  • Monitor student behavior throughout the school day: classroom, class changes, lunch, recess.

  • Administer consistent, appropriate interventions for student misbehavior.

  • Maintain student and teacher dignity at all times.

  • Realize that student behavior issues are additional opportunities to teach a student.
    4.Analyze test data and other diagnostic information and use this information in planning.
    5.Use assessment as an integral element in instruction. Check student work and provide feedback in a timely manner.
    6.Be knowledgeable of and use current technologies in planning, communications, and in instruction.
    7.Work cooperatively with all staff members, consistently maintain a professional attitude and work as an effective member of the high school "team".
    8.Make parent contacts an important element in the overall learning experience.
    9.Maintain accurate records and submit reports and other information in a timely

manner.
10. Perform all assigned non-instructional duties.
11. Understand and comply with laws and policies.
12. Develop a plan for professional growth and participate in staff development activities.
13. Maintain high performance expectations for all students.
14. Regularly attend extracurricular activities as a support to the total high school

program.
15. Serve as an advocate to an assigned group of students.
16. Serve as a club sponsor.
17. Develop and implement PEP's for advocate students as needed.
18. Attend all meetings:

  • Faculty

  • Departmental

  • Staff Development

  • Others as required


  1. Serve as a positive representative of the high school in the community.

Other Functions:
1.Other duties as assigned by the principal.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required:
1.Have or be eligible for NC licensure in high school area of assignment
2.Previous experience with high school students preferred

Terms of Employment: 10 months Teacher Salary Scale

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Board of Education policy, North Carolina statutes, and goals established by the Principal.

Assist with instruction. * Prepare materials according teacher directions. * Assist in administering student assessments. * Lead small group activities. * Interact with students in centers. * Work with individual students. * Perform other instructional tasks assigned by the supervising teacher(s) or the school administration. 2. Assist with student supervision. * Monitor students during lunch. * Assist with other supervision tasks as assigned by the supervising teacher(s) or the school administration. 3. Perform clerical tasks. * Check student papers and folders. * Collect and correctly record money. * Assist with other record keeping and clerical tasks assigned by the supervising teacher(s). 4. Communicate appropriately within and about the educational environment. * Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate confidentiality. * Maintain a positive, professional tone of voice when speaking with other staff members and parents. * Maintain a serious, caring tone of voice when dealing with students. * Treat students fairly. * Follow the teacher's classroom management/behavior plan. 5. Assist the teacher with classroom appearance. * Arrange furniture in the classroom. * Prepare bulletin boards. For Exceptional Children Teacher Assistant Substitutes: Essential Functions: 1. Assist in planning/implementing instruction for students identified as exceptional. 2. Assist in overseeing the distribution and intake of medication to students on continuous dosage regimens. 3. Assist in daily instruction to self-contained and resource students. 4. Assist with the maintenance of adaptive communication equipment and other specialized equipment related to the exceptional children's program. 5. Assist in the identification of specific needs of the exceptional children's program and order appropriate materials using the allotted budget. 6. Attend to daily physical needs of students as required. 7.Hold a valid bus driver's license and drive a bus as needed. Education, Experience, and Skills Required: 1.High school diploma. 2.Prior experience working with children is preferred Terms of Employment: This is an "as needed position." Substitutes will be called when needed by the school in the absence of a regular teacher assistant. Substitutes are not guaranteed a minimum number of hours per year. Substitute Teacher Assistants are paid a daily rate of $80 per day. Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Board of Education policy, North Carolina statutes, and goals established by the Principal. Complaints made by a school principal about a substitute teacher may result in the removal of the substitute from the Substitute List. Environmental Factors: Usual classroom working conditions.
