We currently have a part time opening for a Funeral Director/Embalmer at Boston Harborside Home of JS Waterman & Son - Waring-Langone and Massachusetts Personal Care Center in Boston, MA. Provides customer service in all areas of funeral arrangements, cremation ceremonies and internment to assist families achieve peace following the loss of a loved one. Provides exemplary personalized and professional service. Implements choices made by the families or legal representative regarding the funeral, final disposition of the body and memorialization of the individual. Interacts with the family to fulfill death care needs. Ensures customer needs are addressed.


  • Arranges and conducts funeral and memorial ceremonies in a professional, organized and caring manner consistent with company policies and procedures

  • Negotiates and enters into funeral contracts

  • Handles contracts, legal documents, and collection of payment in accordance with company policies.

  • Ensures client families are informed of special recognition/services available for veterans and ensures the delivery of selected recognition/services.

  • Arranges for the interment or cremation of human remains

  • Adheres to all company and regulatory requirements

  • Retains heritage and grows market share through active involvement with community, religious and other organizations

  • Performs on-call responsibilities including:

  • Taking first calls

  • Talking with families

  • Answering questions

  • Providing initial details

  • Conducting transfers

  • Confirms authorization to proceed with the service arrangements

  • Supervises and cares for the deceased in a respectful manner while performing a variety of tasks which include:

  • Embalming, including verifying identification of the deceased and obtaining authorization for embalming

  • Restoring

  • Dressing, styling hair and/or applying cosmetics.

  • Preparing cremated remains, including container selection, paperwork and identification procedures

  • Any other preparation required for human remains

  • Supervises funeral services by:

  • Supervising the parking of cars

  • Ushering

  • Driving funeral vehicles

  • Assisting at chapel and church services

  • Assisting at the cemetery

  • Delivering flowers, caskets, urn, photos and other personal keepsakes or mementos of client families

  • Setting up chairs and the removing, properly caring for and storing of these items

  • Participating at special functions

  • Other duties, as required

  • Ensures adherence to all applicable professional, municipal, provincial/state and federal licensing authority, regulations and rules

  • Provides aftercare in absence of Family Service Counselor. Aftercare includes delivery of:

  • Documentation

  • Stationery

  • Information on insurance, health benefits and pension

  • Pre-arrangements for next of kin

  • Ensures potential pre-need referrals are shared with Family Service Counselors

  • Completes and accurately prepares of all documents related to services, cremations, maintenance, and any other type of data entry; prepares reports as necessary

  • May assist with general office duties

  • May assist with the maintenance of vehicles, the facility and property

  • Receives caskets and other funeral home supplies as well as places into inventory

  • Ensures refreshments are available (where allowed by law)

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements & Qualifications


  • High School diploma or general equivalency degree (or diploma).

  • Completion of a dual degree training program at an accredited mortuary college or technical school specializing in funeral AND mortuary science.


  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an Embalmer, Apprentice or Funeral Director, Apprentice in a funeral firm or embalming facility.


  • Must meet all licensing requirement in applicable state/province as required by law as prescribed by each state board.

  • Valid driver's license

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of religious and fraternal organizations customs.

  • Knowledge of computers and some software including MS Office products required

  • High level of compassion and integrity

  • Good communication skills

  • Problem solving skills

  • Ability to multi task and set priorities

  • Detail oriented

GENERAL OVERVIEW: The Assistant Nurse Director (AND) is an important member of the unit-based leadership team in clinical practice environments to extend leadership presence and provide clinical support. Under the leadership/direction of the nurse director, the assistant nurse director is a representative of the Department of Nursing and supports the nurse director in translating the vision and values of the department at the unit-level for the purpose of meeting the needs of patients and families and in creating a therapeutic, healing patient/family centered practice environment. The assistant nurse director helps to develop the very best staff, assists with assessing clinical patterns within populations, and facilitates mobilization/allocation of resources to meet the immediate needs of patients and families. The AND may perform leadership functions as developmentally appropriate under the mentorship and coaching of the nurse director and may be assigned the management of specific projects. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: A. Professional Practice Environment * Provides support in the environment to facilitate excellent nursing practice * Promotes and supports the Department of Nursing vision as well as unit based mission, values, and goals * Facilitates true collaboration and effective communication and respect for diverse perspectives through role-modeling and coaching clinical staff and members of the interprofessional team * Participates in daily huddles/rounds with clinical staff for the purpose of clinical consultation, coaching, and problem-solving B. Personnel Management * Manages day to day staffing based on unit-based guidelines approved by the nurse director * Manages resources in a changing environment by allocating resources to respond to dynamic changes in patient census and acuity * Provides guidance to clinical staff on patient assignments with continuity of care and knowing the patient as a core value in addition to facilitating the development of clinical staff * Participates in scheduling and approving requests from clinical staff under the direction of the nurse director * Participates in the investigation and administration of corrective action under the direction of the nurse director/nurse administrator * Provides nurse director with recommendation for corrective action and performance improvement plans * Provides nurse director with recommendations for evaluations for clinical staff * Provides support to staff in clinical support roles under the direction of the nurse director * Performs evaluations of support staff under the direction of the nurse director * Develops education and training for support staff and works with nurse director to integrate these groups into the larger interprofessional team C. Clinical Leadership * Functions as a clinical expert emulating the vision and mission of the Department of Nursing * Interprets policies and procedures for staff members * Implements and monitors unit-based standards * Facilitates and expedites patient flow to ensure that patients and families receive appropriate and timely care D. Project Management * Provides leadership and participates in unit-based projects under the direction of the nurse director * Promotes and assists with the implementation of clinical practice changes and quality initiatives on the patient care unit * Engages clinical staff in the implementation and evaluation of clinical practice changes on the patient care unit F. Patients and Families * Facilitates all patients and families feeling known by clinical staff * Guides clinical staff in the development of a plan of care that is culturally sensitive and honors the uniqueness of each patient and family * Provides coaching and mentoring with clinical staff to facilitate the development of partnerships with patients and families * Provides consultation to clinical staff in the management of challenging patients and families * Participates in family meetings with the nurse director * Facilitates family meetings in the nurse director's absence in consultation with executive director/nurse administrator or available leadership Qualifications: * Current nursing licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts * 2 years experience as RN required. * 2 years Medicine experience preferred. * Previous and/or current leadership experience required. * MSN preferred.
