The Horticulturalist will act as an area/team specialist to provide specific horticultural care to an assigned area of the estate gardens and grounds. As a subject matter expert, the Horticulturalist will ordinarily be involved with and/or responsible for (but not limited to: design; training; plant maintenance; presentations/talks; ordering and procurement; and special projects and functions as needed. This is a "hands on" position that will also offer general support to the horticulture crews, as well as the leadership teams, department, and company as required. Prior experience with the care and maintenance of Roses is preferred. Shift - 7am - 3:30pm Essential Job Duties: 1. Performs skilled gardening duties including but not limited to: installing and maintaining healthy plants with no supervision. 2. Leads in developing design elements of assigned area by recommending plants, plant combinations and other artistic elements. 3. Monitors and controls pest levels and plant health in assigned areas through IPM and nutrient management without supervision. 4. Selects and prepares soils and compost as needed for planting. 5. Applies appropriate business practices when developing garden designs and procedures; understands financial impact and cost/benefits. 6. Initiates maintenance procedures for common issues; seeks supervisory direction and input for technical and procedural issues as necessary. 7. Presents lectures, training programs; represents department internally/externally. 8. Performs basic grounds maintenance duties including but not limited to: general cleanup, trash removal, weeding, mowing, hauling and chipping brush. 9. Ensures compliance with all safety procedures. 10. Provides input and assists with budgeting and planning. Requirements: 1. High school diploma required. Additional education, training, and/or certification(s) preferred. Ideal candidate will have a two or four-year degree in Horticulture. 2. Minimum of three (3) years of related horticultural experience. Equivalent combination of education/experience considered. Candidates will have advanced expertise in a particular area of Horticulture (e.g. roses, tropical plants); solid knowledge of design principals and philosophies preferred. 3. Must be able to identify signs of disease/stress in plants; anticipate and address issues appropriately. 4. Demonstrated commitment to delivery of world class internal/external guest service; proven leadership skills. 5. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; conveys information clearly, concisely to various audiences; strong public speaking skills. 6. Excellent planning, organizational, time/project management skills; adapts and prioritizes work; focus on quality and keen attention to details. 7. Proactive, exercises good judgment; creatively problem solves and troubleshoots. 8. Builds positive, professional relationships internally/externally; team player; works effectively independently. 9. Prior experience with the care and maintenance of Roses is preferred. Physical Requirements: This position will require a physical exam at the Biltmore Clinic prior to starting work. An offer of employment is conditional upon the successful completion of this examination. 1. Ability to walk/stand for extended periods of time. 2. Must be able to repetitively lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs. 3. Ability to kneel, stoop, bend, and reach overhead and below. 4. Works outdoors in all types of weather with fluctuations in temperature and conditions; exposure to dust, dirt, pollen, chemicals, and particulates. 5. Manual dexterity with the ability to operate small gardening tools, equipment (including edgers and shears), and standard transmission vehicles. 6. Must have a valid driver's license. 7.
