We are seeking Full-time and Part-time Crisis Workers to respond to local and national crisis hotline calls and text messages. Crisis Workers respond empathically to crisis calls and texts using an evidence-based model of active-listening and risk assessment to support community members confidentially. Crisis Workers are trained to provide people in crisis with a safe space for listening, referrals to resources, and provide emergency active rescue or intervention if necessary.

What are the shift times? Our 24/7 operations schedule runs like a first responder or hospital.
Current shift openings are: 3rd Shift 11:00PM-7:30AM and two 'mids', 12:00PM-8:30PM and 8:00PM-4:30AM. We design our shifts based around predicted call volume increases and part-time schedules may be different from these designated shifts. Work week includes weekdays, weekends and some holidays.
Do I get to choose my schedule? You will choose which primary shift you apply for; the shifts are outlined above.
Our Crisis Workers are on 1st, 2nd or 3rd Shift teams. Your weekly scheduled will be within those shift times and is determined by the CrisisLink Director and Operations Manager and given out 2 weeks in advance for a month at a time. While we try to work with staff's schedule, flexibility in the days you can work is needed. As first responders, we cannot always predict when the volume of calls will change and we need some level of flexibility with our employees.
How much does the job pay? We pay a competitive starting hourly wage of $16.50 - $17.50 per hour, more depending on related experience and education.
Are there benefits? Full-time or those Part-time Crisis Workers work who are scheduled to work at least 20 hours / week are eligible for benefits. What is the environment of the call center? Our call center environment is designed to be comfortable, supportive and responsive to the Crisis Worker's needs.
Staff and volunteers answer calls, chats and texts at cubicles or workstations, each with a computer and phone. Often times, you will find snacks provided and fun activities to engage in between crisis contacts!
How many other people will I be working with? On any given shift there are 2-5 staff and most evenings several volunteers. Shift Supervisors and additional Support staff are available 24/7 to help.
What kinds of calls do you receive? Individuals going through any type of emotional or mental health crisis, including experiencing suicidal thoughts / ideation, depression, trauma, sexual violence, can use the hotline, chat and textline services. Our service is open to anyone who needs us and every call is a little bit different.
Where is the work located? Our ability to do life changing and life-saving work is made better because our staff work out of our call center located in Oakton, VA.
When performing life-saving interventions, working alongside your peers is essential for your safety and support and for the safety of our clients. Staff are considered Essential Personnel and are expected to make every effort to arrive on time for their designated shift.
Do I need related experience or receive training? Previous experience is not required.
We offer extensive training for a total of about 60 hours. Training includes live training with a Core Trainer, online modules and on-the-job training (OJT) where you listen to a staff take calls and they listen to you take calls, providing important feedback.
What characteristics do I need to be successful in this job? The most successful Crisis Workers demonstrate a sincere desire to help people in crisis either because of their own life experiences or the experiences of people they care about.
Empathy, flexibility in thought, self-awareness and boundaries are critical characteristics and skills a Crisis Worker must have. Additionally, we have observed that Crisis Workers with strong distress tolerance and healthy coping skills are able to work in this environment. We use a person-centered and strengths-based approach with our clients and with our Crisis Workers and we encourage our team to constantly learn and grow.
