Full Time Tenure Track Faculty, Economics Instructor

FACULTY AT WHATCOM

Responsibilities

The Social Science department prepares students for transfer, employment, or continued education in Economics.

The successful applicant is expected to:

  • Teach an equivalent of 15 credits per quarter across the discipline, from introductory courses for non-majors to specialized classes for students transferring to economics and business degrees;

  • Lead the economics discipline faculty in class scheduling, curriculum development and economics adjunct faculty hiring, and perform other duties relevant to the needs of the discipline/program, as outlined in the faculty negotiated agreement;

  • Contribute to the future vision of the economics, business and social science programs at the college in collaboration with faculty, staff, and administrators;

  • Remain current in the field and participate in professional development activities that expand content knowledge and increase instructional effectiveness;

  • Update, revise, and maintain curriculum to the highest standards in the field;

  • Engage in college and/or community service.

Qualifications

Full-time faculty are expected to have a sufficient campus presence to conduct meetings with students, conduct college business, and fulfill college service obligations. This includes a presence for face-to-face office hours, as appropriate for the course, college meetings, Opening Week and other scheduled in-service days, and departmental or committee meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in economics or a closely related field, with a minimum of 30 quarter hours (18 semester hours) of graduate credit in Economics.

  • Experience teaching in a higher education setting using a student-centered approach to teaching and learning.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in online teaching, including proficiency with a learning management system (preferably Canvas).

  • Experience instructing a diverse population of students, incorporating pedagogies that support effective teaching methodologies for all students and informed critical feedback on assignments with the intent to remodel or create new curricular materials.

  • Leadership experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication abilities with students and colleagues.

  • An understanding of, and commitment to, the role of the community college in higher education.

Salary

Salary and Appointment:

  • The 2023-24 Master's degree salary for a full-time, tenure track Economics instructor for Fall Quarter 2024 begins at $75,897.00 (additional degrees, experience, and state-funded and negotiated increases will increase the actual starting salary); 174-day annual contract.

Benefit Package:

  • The position comes with a full benefits package, including health, dental, life, long-term disability insurance and a retirement plan.

  • Accrues 7 hours per month sick leave while on contract (10 months).
