K-8 Music Teacher Job Description
Position Title: 1.0 Music Teacher

Reports To: Executive Director

Position Summary: The MRA Music Teacher is responsible for teaching music to students in grades K-6 and elective music courses for students in grades 7-8. This includes developing and implementing a comprehensive music education program that fosters students' appreciation and understanding of music, as well as their performance skills.

MRA Music Philosophy: The Molalla River Academy Music program has been developed with the mission statement of the school as the driving force.

It is our belief that music intersects with all other disciplines; connects communities and affects all people. Every child deserves a music education.

MRA acknowledges that as a language, the reading and notating of music should be taught only after the child has experienced music through movement, singing, playing instruments, listening, composing and improvising. MRA utilizes the Orff methodology which combines music, speech, movement, and drama into music lessons that are similar to the ways a child plays naturally.

Key Responsibilities:

Plan, develop, document, and implement music lessons that align with state and national music education standards.
Teach general music to all grade levels (K-6), incorporating a variety of musical genres, instruments, and activities.
Introduce students to basic music theory, vocal techniques, and instrument handling.
Prepare students for school events and other performances.
Assess and evaluate student progress through regular assessments and provide feedback.
Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation and engagement.
Collaborate with other teachers and staff to integrate music into the broader school curriculum and integrated arts program.
Maintain and manage musical instruments and other classroom equipment.
Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in music education.
Communicate regularly with parents about student progress and upcoming events.
Follow all school policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field.
State teaching certification in music education.
Strong knowledge of music theory, history, and performance.
Proficiency in playing multiple musical instruments.
Excellent classroom management and communication skills.
Ability to inspire and motivate students of all skill levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching music at the elementary level.
Ability to direct choir or instrumental ensembles.
Knowledge of diverse musical traditions and cultures.

Work Environment:

Classroom setting.
Requires standing, sitting, and moving around the classroom.
Some evening and weekend hours for performances and events.
