Job Summary

The counselor will provide personal and educational counseling for individualized students. The counselor will work with students who are seeking their degree/certificate and or who may be at-risk. The counselor will devise and implement strategies to help in the retention and academic success of students. Community college counselors must be generalists as well as specialists. While the position emphasizes working with students to strengthen academic success, other responsibilities include crisis intervention, pre-admission counseling, re-admission petitions, recruitment and other duties as needed or as assigned. This position will require weekly trips to the Omak campus.

Essential Functions

The counselor shall perform the following duties:

  • Short Term Counseling: provide short term mental health counseling, crisis intervention and recommend, if needed, agency referrals to students.

  • Student Service Liaison: provide student services to students who may be academically at risk; work with students and faculty in which classroom student behavior may be an issue; and, as requested by faculty, provide classroom presentations about career services, retention issues and support services.

  • Community Agency Referrals: work in collaboration with community agencies such as, DVR, DSHS, private vocational providers, L & I, Community Action Council, WorkSource and other agencies to ensure students are receiving quality services as needed.

  • Petitions and Appeals: review re-admission petitions, overload requests, low grade removal, general petitions and counsel with students regarding personal concerns with appeals.

  • Educational Planning: assist with educational planning for new/prospective students regarding the requirements of academic transfer and professional/technical programs and/or degrees.

  • Retention Strategies: develop, collaborate and implement retention strategies that will effectively increase student success.

  • Collaboration Strategies: partner with other WVC counselors to develop comprehensive counseling services that enhance WVC student's experiences.

  • Respect the diversity of fellow staff, faculty and students and incorporate equity into counseling resources and services when possible.

  • Think critically about how to serve historically minoritized students and implement counseling strategies to promote an equitable and healthy learning environment.

  • Actively participate in college-wide committees.

  • Assist in new student advising and registration sessions.

  • Effectively perform other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited university in counseling, psychology, social work or closely related field.

  • Bilingual (written and oral in Spanish/English) and comfortable translating and engaging the student and community in both languages.

  • Commitment to equitable student success and experience working with diverse populations.

  • Willingness to prioritize professional growth and development in the area of equity and inclusion.

  • Experience using various computer applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mental health counseling experience.

  • Experience creating digital content (such as Word/PDF documents and web and learning management system content as appropriate to the role) in accessible formats.

  • Strong written, oral and listening skills.

Additional Information

Terms of Employment:

This is full-time, non-tenure, one year temporary faculty position. The salary for the position is determined by placement on the Wenatchee Valley College full-time faculty schedule (currently $74,259 to $82,480 for a 9-month, 175-day contract). Class assignments may include day, evening and distance courses. This position is scheduled to begin fall quarter (September) 2024.

Bargaining Unit:

This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by the Association for Higher Education. Faculty workload, compensation and job expectations are defined by a contract negotiated between the faculty union and the WVC Board of Trustees.
