About our Engineering Team:

As a member of Foursquare's engineering team, we want you to bring experience building real products from the ground up. We're passionate about tackling tough challenges in the location space and look for others who like to dive deep into code and help solve hard problems. You should be comfortable running with your own ideas and eager to learn new skills on a bleeding edge platform. We use a variety of tools, technologies, and languages to build software (Scala, Thrift, MongoDB, Memcached, ES2015+ JavaScript, React/Redux, Webpack, Closure Compiler, Pants) but experience with equivalent ones will do just fine.

In the last year, our small team has shipped countless features and improvements in addition to 4 major new products: Attribution by Foursquare, Pilgrim SDK Dashboard, Foursquare Analytics, and an internal research tool. Our engineers play a key role in product development, from concept to launch, so be ready to bring your creative ideas to the table as we continue to scale up our SaaS web products. We push new versions of the website and API almost every day so it won't take long to get your work out in front of our millions of users.


  • 3+ years of proven experience building software for fast growing web or mobile products

  • Solid foundation in computer science fundamentals with sound knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and design

  • Strong JavaScript skills and experience building highly interactive web apps using modern client-side view frameworks such as React/Redux (preferred), Angular, or Vue.js

  • Experience with Java or other object-oriented programming language or, even better, experience and/or interest in functional languages (we use Scala!)

  • Experience with RESTful web services, both writing your own and consuming those written by others

  • Bonus points for experience building interactive data visualizations using libraries like D3, Highcharts, and Leaflet, and for experience working with big data systems like Hive, Hadoop, Scalding and Spark.

  • Comfortable in a small and fast-paced startup environment

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience

VIEW JOBS 4/19/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-07-18T00:00 Position Summary: As part of the Department of Education's (DOE's) Division of Teaching and Learning (DT&L), the Office of School Performance (OSP) produces important reports and data tools to help educators and administrators best serve New York City's population of 1,100,000+ students and 80,000+ teachers across 1800+ schools. OSP's commitment to developing innovative, interactive, and data rich tools for educators and staff now requires a Full Stack Web Developer who will work with a team of analysts, designers, and developers in a collaborative, mission-driven environment to develop EduStat. EduStat is a research-based approach to school improvement that flattens our organization, elevates our values, and advances equitable outcomes for all students. The EduStat process enables our organization to monitor the progress and impact of teams' strategic plans, and is modeled on other municipal "Stat" models from NYC and other major U.S. Cities. Performs related work. Reports to: Director, Product Development Direct Reports: N/A Key Relationships: Works closely with other ORD staff; the Office of School Performance; Research and Policy Support Group; and the Office of the First Deputy Chancellor; as well as with other OPE staff members, including SAS, SQL, R, and Python programmers, web developers, data quality managers, data scientists, data and policy analysts, and policy makers; and with the Division of Instructional and Information Technology (DIIT). Will also liaise closely with DIIT partners, including senior project managers, server architects, and solution architects. Responsibilities * Lead the web development efforts for EduStat. * Plan, design, integrate, and develop back-end database-driven features, in collaboration with UX Designers and research analysts. * Utilize the Python language and frameworks, such as Flask. * Create interactive web user interfaces in JavaScript. * Develop and deploy public- and school-facing websites in code that is cross-browser and cross-platform friendly. * Provide technical advice and make recommendations to other team members. * Support ongoing development and drive new development for EduStat and related underlying projects. * Support all development-related aspects of EduStat, including: * working with teams of developers and database managers to build scalable, secure, and dynamic web tools for all members of the NYCDOE, including back-end and front-end infrastructure, planning, testing, systems programming, and team process management; * partnering with DIIT, OPE teams, and others to create long-term value, manage solution architecture, and ensure compliance with all standards, laws, and protocols; and * ensuring the site stability and managing the technical execution of enhancements to support EduStat and the Department's goal of equity and improvement. * Develop, deploy, and support new interactive web tools. This includes: * applying best practices to ensure that languages such as JavaScript, Python, HTML, CSS, and Angular are being used to maximize user experience for teachers and students; * developing and managing protocols and processes across teams of developers to manage code deployment, code review, and systems stability; and * researching, recommending, and implementing new solution architecture where needed. Qualification Requirements: Minimum Professional/vendor certification(s) in database administration that is required for the position to be filled. In addition, all candidates must have the following: * A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and two years of satisfactory full‐time (not classroom based) experience in database administration planning, design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management; or * A four‐year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full‐time (not classroom based) information technology experience of which at least 2 years must have been as described in ʺ1ʺ above; or * A satisfactory equivalent of education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Education may be substituted for experience on the basis that 30 undergraduate semester credits from an accredited college is equivalent to 6 months of experience. A masters degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college may substitute for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory full‐time (not classroom based) information technology experience as described in ʺ1ʺ above.
