Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The primary purpose of Cogeneration Systems is the generation of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals. Steam is critical to the operations of the University and UNC Hospitals.

It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instrument, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation. It can presently supply about 30 percent of the peak campus electrical load. Cogeneration Systems is part of UNC Energy Services.

Position Summary

This position performs installation, operation, preventative and corrective maintenance and repair of equipment in the Coal and Ash area of Cogeneration Systems. Examples include, but is not limited to: rebuilding cylinders, replacing solenoid valves, aligning and checking tension on the old and new bags, draining and washing the tower, changing oil in fan gear boxes, rig and support with correct chains, cables and/or hoists, inspecting for coal leaks, flight conveyors, bucket elevator chains and welding. This position must report to work during periods of adverse weather or other University emergency (emergency-duty position). Work schedule is Monday - Thursday 7:00AM - 5:30PM.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires certification(s).

Utilities, fuel and/or coal handling experience in the maintenance area.

Required Licenses/Certifications Special Physical/Mental Requirements

The environmental conditions vary tremendously from an air conditioning and heated control room to dusty, hot, humid and cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions at various lengths of time depending on the need or operational requirements.

This position will be required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with the established procedures. PPE required but not limited to: safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, back harness, respirator use/SCBA and uniforms.Physical effort required for the position includes, but not limited to: climbing ladders/stairs (regular part of the job), working in confined spaces, being in contact with hazardous materials and lifting/moving up to 50 lbs. independently.
