The principal purpose of this position is to participate in and supervise the design, planning, organization, implementation, and continuous evaluation of the Dental Hygiene Program.  The position will be responsible for all aspects of the Dental Hygiene program including curriculum, assessment and evaluation, supervision of faculty, compliance with accreditation standards, as well as facilitating as an instructor for the program.  A reduced teaching load will be assigned to ensure the needs of the program are met. This Program Director/Instructor for Dental Hygiene will report to the Dean of Health and Human Services.

  • Performs supervisory duties for the Dental Hygiene programs; follows progress of work and sees that schedules are met; plans work to be done and determines methods to be used; ensures quality of work; handles disciplinary matters; arranges for scheduling of hours; insures that new faculty are trained.

  • Plans, organizes, and directs department programs of study offered at all locations by Montgomery Community College including clinical sites.

  • Supervises all full-time and part-time instructors in the Dental Hygiene program.

  • Monitors and reviews faculty performance through formal and informal evaluations.

  • Represents college administration on all department related program committees and program advisory committees.

  • Provides counsel, advice, and assistance to instructors in the development of course content and outlines, and the preparation of required class reports and records.

  • Assesses individual class needs; make arrangement for suitable classroom facilities; and requisitions, distributes, and accounts for essential equipment, materials, and supplies.

  • Conducts all activities in accordance with established policies and guidelines of Montgomery Community College, the North Carolina Community Colleges and pertinent state regulatory agencies. Directs the Dental Hygiene program, including the development, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum.

  • Maintains designated hours each week for student advising, faculty advising, and program planning.

  • Teaches in the Dental Hygiene program.

  • Obtains and maintains program accreditation through the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)

  • Attends CODA meetings and other program related groups.

  • Validates and documents current, faculty credentials.

  • Directs and monitors programs to ensure SACSCOC and licensure/accreditation compliance.

  • Assists in program enhancement through grant development activities.

  • Serves as liaison for the Dental Hygiene program with other college departments, divisions, agencies, industries, and other organizations.

  • Serves on assigned college committees.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Education/Training:

  • Master's Degree or higher related to Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, or other field related to healthcare, education, or administration

  • Be a graduate of a CODA accredited program

  • Experience in higher education, management of fiscal and human resources, curriculum development, evaluation, and planning.

  • Organization skills, adherence to detail, and follow-up are essential.

  • Judgement is needed in interpreting and prescribing guidelines and procedures for dental hygiene education to comply with CODA and SACSCOC guidelines.

  • Hold a NC Dental Hygiene or Dental license or eligible to apply for NC license

  • Current Certification in Local Anesthesia or willing to complete within 6 months of hire.

Required Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum of five years qualifying experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist or Dentist

  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience  

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and sit; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee is often required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and far vision and ability to adjust focus.
